    New Zealand Customs

Greets to all, if anyone wants to know:

I have been bringing snus in to New Zealand for a year now, and have had no problems with Customs or duty. But just yesterday. I was notified by NZ Customs that they are holding my package of snus (5 cans of los) until I pay them NZ$134 in duty. So it can happen here folks, be careful! Now I am very worried about what will happen with my next order!

Was that duty due for back tax on all your snus orders, or was it just for the one order of 5 tins? I have a friend visiting from NZ and he just placed an order for about ten tins (his first snus order). I sure hope he doesn't get nailed with a big customs charge like that (or double that!).

$134 was just for the 5 cans - the duty on tobacco is $328 per kilo, then they add some GST (Tax on Tax, WTF??), then on top of that is a nice little fee for biosecurity processing..... So yeah I will have to pay because I don't want to end up on some blacklist.... but I hope next time it slips through unnoticed as usual *sigh*

When you say a "package" you mean a tin right? Those small circle things...

I've just gone through the same, do they really own a black list? This is too much to pay haha...

With those rates, you'd be better off flying to Sweden once a year, and getting a years supply at one time.

Haha, it doesn't work like that.

For passengers, the limit is 250g to bring back. That's like 10 tins. Hardly enough...

And I've rung up the custom charges, apparently they charge every gram of it -- passengers are different cases, apparently.

              Homos...

Do those rates apply to canned soup, or perhaps canned ham? ;^)
