So, since we last spoke, there has been some progress!
I've read every thread on here about making your own snus and growing your own tobacco. Clearly we at SnusOn are living amongst geniuses! Much of this road has already been, not only traveled, but mapped! I have some new friends to make around here.
I've also, through those threads, surfed to a variety of other wonderful web sites that have a wealth of information on snus, growing tobacco, making snus, flavoring snus, etc.
So, I decided to get some seed and plant maybe a dozen plants this year. This will give me some experience and some more seed!
I went to http://www.seedman.com/Tobacco.htm and bought some "TA39 Havana 501" which is apparently "A large leaf type Havana well suited for chewing. Grows better than other varieties in poor soil. A large plant reaching 6-7 ft. with leaves spaced far apart."
I think it is also a "Wisconsin Tobacco". And as I understand some snus tobacco is grown in Wisconsin. Also, Wisconsin has a somewhat similar climate to Omaha, although we probably have a bit longer growing season down here in the "south."
"Wisconsin tobacco" is also rumored to have lower TNSA's.
I also bought the book they sell. But I think, really, I could do ok without it given the wealth of info on SnusOn and various other web sites. But, I kind of have a book fetish.
I also ordered some "PI 551281" aka "HAVANA 503" from here: http://www.ars-grin.gov/npgs/acc/acc_queries.html They give these out for educational and research purposes. I'm not sure if I qualify, but I don't have a problem writing up our experience with growing these. I didn't think I have the appropriate background to claim to be doing "research". But, I think I can sleep well asking under the "educational" portion of their mission.
So, there is a block where you have to tell them what you are going to do with the seeds. I put, "Educational project - WRT: germination rates, insect and disease control and air curing outcomes.", and if I don't get seeds from them - that's fine. If we do get some seed via this route, I'll write up my experience with their seeds as it relates to germination rates, any encountered insect and disease issues and how the air curing turns out.
I'm waiting on:
- SnusX bucket
- Flavorings
- Seeds from Vendor
- Seeds From Govt
- Book from seed vendor
Well, that's our update for now!
But, a deal is a deal, so I'll let them know how things go with their seeds. They sent 0.1g of seeds. Which should be more then plenty for me.
