Hi Ansel - good to hear from you.

I would say its fine to swallow if it is pure calcium carbonate which is a far less alkaline compound than the sodium or potassium carbonates found in snus recipes. Essentially it is just chalk and is found in things designed for consumption such as milk of magnesia.

But do be careful if you are not 100% sure of its composition!

WOW that was just the kind of response i needed - thanks John. Yes i have been smoking cigarettes since i have been out here... getting snus shipped out here could be unreliable and expensive. I think i will give this a try as the cigs are taking their toll on my body. Thanks again mate.

they sell this stuff called "super power" out here which is in foil pouches and pre-prepared readymixed but i am not 100% sure on the ingredients... so i will buy the loose stuff and mix it in the palm of my hand.

I am of course a complete idiot!

I misread calcium hydroxide as calcium carbonate. Although it's less alkaline than sodium hydroxide it's going to be way more powerful than chalk. And I'm not sure of its edibility although the fact that loads of people regularly put it in their mouths would indicate it won't kill you stone dead!

Is the white powder gutka? Check out this article. I can't help thinking the problem is not the tobacco but the the white powder they use. So of course tobacco is blamed.

India’s Battle to Ban Chewing Tobacco

Gutka is a crushed preparation of tobacco and “paan masala,” a mixture of areca or betel nut, sugar, spices and perfume.
I met a guy from India who was using a smokeless tobacco. It came in a can, looked like cigarette tobacco, and smelled very minty. I wasn't sure if the missing tooth in the same area he placed the tobacco was coincidental.

Ah man i have to do something - the cigarettes are killing me. I have had a really chesty cough and medicine is helping but not getting rid of it. So i bought so bicarbonate soda and i'm using that with the tobacco. The bags of tobacco cost about 5 rupees so is pretty much free. The bicarb is not as strong as the lime and even though bicarb is not supposed to be great for the enamel on your teeth... heck, it has to be better than smoking.

Good news Ansel, can't you just get snuff and use that instead? I would rather do that than smoke.

Heck if someone in the UK wanted to save a few quid and abide by the law i'd buy a tub of Bicarb Soda and a load of air-cured burley from a snuff maker.
