    Cigars

I know this has been discussed lightly here, but I couldn't find a topic dedicated solely to cigars. So, without further adieu, what are your favorite cigars and why? What is your favorite drink to enjoy with a cigar?

I just finished smoking a Hoyo Excalibur 1066 Dark Knight, and it was fantastic!

My top faves, now including the excalibur:
La Gloria Cubana Series R no. 6
    Hoyo Excalibur 1066 series
    Rocky Patel Vintage '92
    Padron 3000 maduro

These are a few that I really like. I also enjoy Partagas, Punch, Arturo Fuentes, and others. I stay away from Cohiba unless it's a real Cuban, which are more common as fakes than as real ones.

I absolutely love Rocky Patel Sun Grown.

I dig Romeo Y Julieta Maduro.

    Oliva serie G are fantastic.

I tried a NUB the day. Very nice.

    1992 Patel is swell.

I usually have a lager or a nice iced tea. I enjoy having a fine cigar after doing some yard work, or after a nice meal.

I got spoiled. I'm not much of a cigar smoker, but my very first was a Padron 1964 Anniversario. After that, I spent some time in China and my friend over there gave me a Montecristo #2 to smoke on his Guilin rooftop.. Shortly thereafter, I went to Shanghai and bought a whole bunch of Romeo Y Julietas #2, Cohibas, and Montecristo #2's. I brought most of them back, Fedexed a bunch to my few cigar-smoking friends, and smoked the rest. Since then I've been enjoying a lot of Padrons (all of them are fantastic), La Gorias, even a lot of Artuo Y Fuentes, a bunch of Ashtons, and even a few Davidoff shorties. I think I was spoiled (lots of smokers would disagree) to start with Padron, Montecristo, and R&J, but I do love a good cigar. A good woman is just a woman, but a good cigar is a SMOKE (George Burns).

EDIT: Because I type like Badfish74 refrains from posting (you can take the harassment Badfish)

Hey now! I resemble that remark! I do not post everytime...much!

I came to this thread to share my vast knowledge of fine cigars dammit!

Swisher Sweets...see there...I know my stuff!

Actually, I am rather challenged when it comes to stogies. I've smoked an R & J "I don't know what" once. Other than that Macanudos...there, I said it...when the stogie mood strikes me, I smoke Macanudos.

But maybe, just maybe, if this thread takes off like i hope it does, I might just be able to learn something and broaden my horizons a bit!

        Are you happy now, Roo?

PS How did Roo even know that I'd even read this thread? Methinks there's some kind of Dark Majik involved here.

          Dammit...I did it again!

Hey, we cant all be experts, right? I don't consider myself an expert either, I just light and enjoy. Here are some tips to get you started: Get yourself a cheap guillotine cigar cutter, about a buck or two. Use a BIC lighter, never a Zippo or any other gasoline lighters, those will impart a flavor into the cigar. Matches may also be used, but let the tip burn for a few seconds to get rid of the sulfur. A piece of cedar can also be used too, but lets not get too complicated.

When you cut the cigar, do not use your teeth or a pair of scissors, you want a straight clean cut removing only the cap, just a few millimeters. Take your bic and lightly toast the end you're going to light, until it's blackened a bit. Stick it in your mouth and light it, rotating the cigar to get a nice even burn. (Insert phallus joke here).

Don't puff on it too often, a puff or two every minute is good, otherwise it will burn too hot and taste bitter. A good hand rolled cigar will last anywhere from half an hour to 2 hours or more (for the long ones). It is perfectly acceptable to smoke it down to the nub if you want, but it's considered polite to remove the band after a few puffs, once the heat has softened the glue. You don't want to tear the fragile wrapper. When you have had enough, set the cigar in the ash tray and let it go out on its own. Stamping it out like a cigarette will cause extra smoke. Dispose of the remains as soon as it's cooled down and doesn't pose a fire hazard, because the smell of stale ash and cigar isn't very nice. I always smoke outside, so I generally leave it in the ashtray overnight and toss it in the morning.

I prefer to enjoy my cigar with a tall glass of ice water, but have anything you want with it.

Since you're a bit unsure of what brand to try, if you want a good smoke without spending too much, I recommend the Punch London Club. Where I live I pay $2.50 a stick and it makes a perfectly respectable smoke.

Good responses so far, keep em up. I know we have a few more cigar smokers on this forum.

That's some great info there! I don't know what all my local tobacco shop has in it's very limited selection, but I will definately have this thread open on my cell the next time I go! That way I can actually venture outside the world of Macanudos

I really hope this thread will take off. I've been wanting to learn more about cigars. But you don't really get much info from the web...most sites don't have newbies in mind...it's usually just a bunch of experts spouting off cigar jargon, and I have no idea what they're talking about.

Great job Snusophile...here's to hoping I can further my knowledge of stogies!!

If we can just get that pesky Roo character to stop interupting class, we might just learn something here!

I really don't have much to add to this thread. When I smoke a cigar(once per year tops) I get Swisher Sweets, or Backwoods :^D

There's a certain nostalgia with the Swishers. I had a very nice summer when I was about 14, where I'd watch back to back Star Trek and SOAP reruns, then at 2am, make some instant coffee, and sit on the back porch and smoke a Swisher while enjoying the night.

They probably don't get too much cheaper, and far from the cigar making art form, but I couldn't see enjoying anything much more than I do Swishers :^)

I'm still a cigar noob but I've tried a bunch over the last 8 months. Rocky Patel and Arturo Fuente are both very good brands IMO.

I almost got to try a real cuban, but the guy that was gonna send it got shot and then never shipped it. (Hey Wiz! Where's that cigar?)LOL

I hope wasn't shot over your cuban!

Do you guys mainly buy from tobacco shops, or online? Also I noticed in above that non cuban Cohibas are strongly warned against, why is that?

And links to any really good online shops would be greatly appreciated!

I don't know about the Cohibas.

I found pretty good prices at pipesandcigars.com

Of course, if you want it right now, you can buy them at BevMo
