Every once in a great while I'll pickup a can of dip. My goto is Longhorn fine cut natural. It's 85% as good as Copenhagen snuff and 400% cheaper($1.50 vs $6). The plastic tin is also useful to me since I don't use it much, and the Copenhagen dries out before I'm finished the tin.
Anyway, I stopped at WaWa yesterday, and they didn't have the natural, so I got the straight. I've never had straight dip, so I didn't know what to expect. I opened the tin, and thought "oh no, wintergreen D^: " The scent was on the mild side, but wintergreen it was, and I hate wintergreen. Putting it in, it actually wasn't so bad. If you squint a little, it kind of tastes like rootbeer, and I like rootbeer. Nice moistness, and very pinchable. It's the first long cut dip I've ever had. Fairly sweet, but not off-putting at first. The problem is the sweetness lasts far too long, and becomes cloying after awhile.
Since it's my first straight, I can't compare it to anything else, but I imagine it would appeal to the average American palate. I doubt I'll get it again. Seems like I only like Copenhagen, and its clones. I like the flavor of salty, smoky leather more than sweet. So... I guess I can recommend for dippers that like sweet stuff, but my real recommendation is for the fine cut natural, especially if you want Copenhagen on a budget. It's also nice and moist, perhaps a bit less pinchable, but has the classic flavor of salt and tobacco(and artificial flavor, and "stuff" :^D), but it's normal. Next time I'll get Grizzly snuff or Copenhagen if they're out of Longhorn.
