    New to Dip

    Hey guys,

I've been doing a bit of research, but all I can find is what can kindly be called "extremely biased anti-tobacco propaganda" on the topic.

I'm a very light nasal snuff user, using 1-3 pinches per day with occasional breaks away from it. Once in a while, I take a portion of snus instead. I've been wanting to try dip, but I'm a bit wary about the health concerns. Some information makes it seem as though one would die in a mass of cancerous lesions at even the thought of dip; but others seem to think it is only due to heavy usage.

My question is, would taking a single dip once in a while instead of snuff/snus be overly dangerous, or would the risk be miniscule to the point of laughable?

Thanks for your time, and for putting up with such a newbie first post!

    Hiya, welcome to SnusOn!

Most of the health scare stuff you'll find on the web is BS. I don't think dip is much worse for you than snus, but in any case, the occasional pinch won't hurt a thing. Go ahead and try it, but I think snus is the superior oral tobacco :^)

I'm thinking about trying it myself as well.. Just for the experience. A pinch every now and again shouldn't be harmfull.

Thanks for the welcome and responses!

Just going on intuition, I've always thought that the majority of trouble arising from tobacco use, as with anything else, is abuse related. It's one of those things to be enjoyed in moderation; otherwise, there's a heavy price to pay indeed!

But because I couldn't find any real information on dip outside of pictures of cadavers and the like, I was a bit wary of trying it. I don't see why it would be any more harmful than any other form of tobacco, especially when used, at most, one dip per day when not using snuff. One can a day, then there might be a problem.

I'm really glad I've found this forum. An excellent way to cut through the propaganda BS out there and examine things from a more realistic perspective.

I suggest starting out with a can of Grizzly's Wintergreen. It will bring a whole new meaning to your life.

Will do. I'll pick up a can tomorrow. I'll tell them Snussles sent me.

Though Samuel Gawith's Kendal Brown Original already changed my life once. I'm not sure how many more life-alterations I can take.

I don't think an occasional dip will be a problem.
I never thought I've even try dip but I have a can now and am slowly going through it. :P

Grizzy Straight...I'd mainline the stuff if I could. I bought a can of it two days ago after a four year hiatus. I've had other dips since but it's been 98% snus since. I've been using it as a treat and in two full days I haven't even killed half the can. I still don't think I could switch back to dip but it's a nice supplemental thing.

A little here and there won't hurt ya. You can get ill effects with the over-consumption of anything.

Dip is weird... I have a few relatives who have dipped for 30+ years and their dental health is fine. On the other hand, one of my close friends had to get surgery on his gums after dipping for two years. If you dip in moderation, your gum tissue will have time to regenerate. I rarely dip now, since snus is more convenient and I don't have to worry about damaging my dental health.

Depends on WHAT you dip too.

FYI OP, I read a study that found that snus is about .5-1% as harmful as smoking, and dip is about 3-5% as harmful as smoking. So it's riskier than snus, but still pretty safe in the grand scope of things. It's definitely not the "Well, if you dip, you might as well be smoking" line that anti-tobacco propaganda will feed you.

Anyways, I dipped before I took up snus, and I still buy the odd can when I'm feeling nostalgic. If you're after a big nicotine rush, try Copenhagen Wintergreen or Grizzly Wintergreen/Mint. They're rough on your gums, though. If you're more after taste, pretty much everything Skoal makes tastes fantastic. All of my recommendations are very different from the flavor of snus, but they're very traditional and common dip flavors. If you want something with a more pure tobacco taste like most snus, try the Straight or Natural flavors. I'd recommend Copenhagen Natural, personally.

Cope snuff, lc and Grizz green are good cope straight, xlc natty, wg are ok, and everything else is mediocre to nasty. Oh and a couple cans you'll be fine without question, if you do too much like half a can a day for a couple months your gums take it hard I know. FYI dip gives you a huge nicotine hit compared to regular portions so if you use the normal amount(I used 3-4g then up to 10g at a time) you will buzz hard.

                          Thanks for the recommendations!

I actually don't care for high nicotine. I guess it's because I'm a light snuff user, and most of that is low to medium nicotine. I get a pretty good buzz and one hell of a metabolism boost on just one portion of snus (~8mg on average.) Considering that I'm also a coffee/caffeine fiend, that makes for quite a bit of stimulation.

Are there any lower nicotine dips you guys would recommend?

The 2 I'd recommend are Copenhagen snuff, and Skoal fine cut wintergreen. Those are the 2 most traditional dips, and was all that was available for years. They may or may not be the best, but I'd go with tradition for my first taste.

Low nicotine and lowest numbers of TSNA's would be Timberwolf or Longhorn dip. Try the Timberwolf Peach if you can find it, quite tasty.

EDIT - lsxkillr, why would you recommend Skoal finecut and Cope snuff to a beginner???
