Seeking advice/knowledge on Snus and Dip

I have been using cope for a little while, about a year. I have been reading on here and a couple other websites about dip and snuss vs smoking. I hate cigarettes and never have used them, and just don't like them or the smoke, etc. Anyways, I have been doing a lot of research and trying to figure out how bad what I am doing really is for me, and seeing mixed results.

Some of what I have seen says that dip is 90% less harmful than smoking while snus is 98% less harmful than smoking. However the most recent data I was able to find was cope - 12ppm TSNA's while swedish snus was around 2 ppm TSNA. The 12ppm for cope was from a long time ago, however.

Another post I saw was giving data for skoal being quite a bit less hazardous than cope, which was disappointing. But I didn't find a whole lot more to back it up.

I guess my main concern is not having any health problems, but being able to continue what I am doing. Does anyone have some real recent data on american dip? I know it has improved greatly since in the past, but how much as of late is my main concern.

Should I be switching over to swedish snus? I really enjoy my cope and don't want to switch out for anything really, but want to be smart at the same time. So how bad is cope really in modern days for me?

Also how does Grizzley compare to skoal and cope in terms of TSNA's and being less hazardous for your health?

    Thanks guys

My father has been using cope daily for the last 47 years with no adverse health affects. His parents and a few of his brothers have died from cancer & emphysema as a result of smoking...
That's just his experience, it's hardly scientific....

If you like cope, then stick with it. If you can find a snus that tastes similar, then i'd switch to it even if it wasn't any safer just so you don't have to spit all the time... bleh...

if you do consider switching, Tthey tell me grov and ettan los have a flavor similar to cope.

Plus the stuff will make you a sexual Tyrannosaurus.

If you do too much of anything it will have adverse effects on you. Throw in that everybody is slightly different and you'll never be able to get a true green-light for it. I've experienced bad from smoking. It took me 15 years to come to terms with it though. I've experienced bad with dip after a few years. I haven't experienced bad with snus (except for how expensive it's getting) in four years so I'm convinced thusfar. I think there are just way too many factors involved to be precise.

It basically comes down to YMMV- your mileage may vary. Everyone is different. One person can dip a can a day for 40 years and die of natural causes late in life, while someone else could get oral cancer, possibly fatal, from just a few years of use.

Snus is generally regarded as the safest way to use tobacco, but again as said above, there is no green light. It depends on your body. But IMO if anyone does something regarded as 'hazardous', for too long, something bad will eventually happen.

TSNAs and cancer aside, dip will mess up your mouth/teeth alot sooner than snus would. I would recommend you to try some different snus out there, like ettan, grov, general and see if you like it. You can switch to snus and still dip on the side.

By the sounds of things your 'little habit' doesn't seem to be terribly bad for you.

If snus is only a little better for you than your dip, and you don't want to stop dip then I suggest keep on dipping. If you start to notice your health has diminished, then I would suggest try an alternative.

That doesn't mean don't try snus. It's a great product and I'm sure you could learn to love both snus and dip.

If I could afford snus and it wasn't such a pain in the ass with new shipping regulations, I would definitely snus vs. dip. But, I never really found a snus that met the exact flavor of Copenhagen or any other natural flavor dip for that matter. The closest match though would be General Ekstra Sterk, Grov, or Ettan IMO. Loose of course.

After being forced back to dip per the PACT Act, I settled on Pinkerton Tobacco products, e.g. RedMan, Timberwolf, and Longhorn (7.5 ppm TSNA).

You are right, the only studies available are over a decade old. But they did find (way back then) that while other dip products may have a TSNA count of X-number during testing, that X-number increased over time (shelf life). The Pinkerton Tobacco remained at 7.5 ppm. The Silvercreek brand skyrocketed into the triple-digits. Apparently it has something to do with a process in manufacturing which inhibits the growth of bacteria, bacteria which increases the nitrosamines.

Of course, Pinkerton Tobacco doesn't taste near as nice as Copenhagen or Redseal Natural (which I really liked), but I had to make a compromise somehow. Actually, I experienced more tenderness of the gums with snus than I ever have with dip. My teeth became very sensitive to the point that I dreaded rinsing my mouth out after each snus. It just varies from person to person. If you can't come to terms with using snus exclusively or changing brands, there is no use in living a miserable life. Do what you enjoy. However, if I could snap my fingers and be free of my addictions without looking back in regret, I would.

I've dipped cope and skoal for 25 - 30 years. Only problem I've had is with cavities. I switched to snus 90% of the time now. Oanlnly time I miss dip is late at night. Give Odens a try love both the Kanel and Original portions.

                      Welcome to snuson!

Every one here has pretty much summed it up.

I do urge you to check out the dippers guide to snus here :
                      http://www.snuson.com/forum/showthre...ght=guide+snus

I found the cut of the snus has a bearing on my enjoyment of it. I prefer a coarse cut.

If you do a small order throw on some Gellivare and some Phantom brown los. Excellent snus...but not quite dip.

I just wanted to update this thread... I have come to enjoy snus quite a bit and seeing as it also fits better into everyday life, I am now going to be using snus only and quitting dip all together. I can't wait to make some orders and try out all the great snus brands and flavors!

Thanks all for your help, there is a great group on here
