So I tried a bunch of dip...

A couple of months ago I was visiting my brother who is living in the UAE these last couple of years. I was going to stay for almost 2 months and without thinking about it, I only brought 5 cans of snus from Sweden. So one day, I wake up, realize I screwed up - and the waiting for insanity (also known as nicotine craving) began. So my brother took me to a tobacconist to set me straight, I realized they had a bunch of cans behind the counter.

Sweet baby of Jerusalem, could it be.....snus? Wait, what is this?

Copenhagen, Skoal, Timberwolf...what the hell is this stuff?

So I bought a couple cans of Copenhagen and Skoal and did some research on dip. I realized this was the type of oral tobacco that I wished to try in my teens (thanks Clint Eastwood) and never found any in Sweden.

After I came home, I occasionally ordered dip from the states to get some variety from my snus habit. And here's my short review of the kinds I tried:

    Copenhagen Long Cut

At first I tried baking this stuff to hell and back with no success (except pressing the juice out of it). After some research I pinched and went to town on my virgin lower lip. It burned like ancient Athens, but then the taste came through - this stuff is pretty good. A very small but barely noticeable chemical taste, but other than that it tasted like slightly bitter BBQ to me.

    Copenhagen Wintergreen

Absolutely wonderful. I rarely use anything other than pure tobacco flavored stuff, this is an exception.

    Skoal Straight

I have a sweet tooth but barely eat sugar because I compete in martial arts, so this stuff was like heaven to me. If you overuse, you will get tired of it quick so use it sparely. It tastes like cotton candy and tobacco.

    Skoal Cherry

Smells actually like cherries, very sweet, very fruity. If you like fruit flavored dip you will love this stuff.

    Skoal Apple

I can't handle apple flavored stuff (except apple pie) so this stuff made me gag. Does smell/taste like apple though.

    Longhorn Long Cut

Cheap, but horrible. I didn't like this stuff at all, minimal flavor that wore off quick. I never cheap out on my oral tobacco, that is one luxury in my life that i'll gladly pay for.

    Copenhagen Extra Long Cut

I love this stuff. I am favored towards tobacco flavored dip and snus, so this stuff was a godsend for me. Rich, full flavor, easy to pack and place. I suggest keeping a fire alarm nearby because this stuff BURNS.

    Cope Smooth Hickory

Disappointed with this stuff frankly. I can't taste any hickory, very light taste, not much more to it. It's pretty much like watered down regular long cut.

I hope you enjoyed my quick reviews.

    Great reviews buddy!

I too actually love dip myself.

Probably more than snus. (the only problem is that I can't widely buy it because I have to order from US)

Mr. Snuff sells dip but they don't have some of my favorites and they're quite expensive too.

I'd love to live in the US and buy dip off the counter.

      Thanks my friend!

I love dip too but it's such a hassle for me to get when I can just walk down the stairs to the kiosk and buy all kinds of snus ever made.

The thing that keeps me from using this stuff more is the health concerns, but I did hear the TSNA levels are far less than they were a couple of years ago.

What kinds do you usually order?

The TSNA levels of dip vary widely, much more than snus, but this is not of great relevance to the problems with dip that some encounter which is the physical aggravation of mouth tissues by the coarse nature of dip compared to snus. I suspect that if one ground typical dip to the fineness of loose snus then those physical aggravation issues would greatly decrease although the relative harshness of the juices compared to snus would remain. That is really a pointless conjecture though since a much finer grind would change the traditional dip experience into something quite different than it currently is. And there's zero need to refine or change traditional dip since there are so many other forms of smokeless available. Lowering TSNA levels of dip doesn't change the dip experience, or significantly change its purported health issues, but radically changing the cut and form definitely would.

The main advantage that dip has in the U.S. is that it is available in vast quantities everywhere and thus enormously easier to get at the retail level than real snus which of course is a source of extreme aggravation to those on this forum.

Thank you for your input, interesting stuff.

One of the huge reasons that I enjoy dip is the cut itself, if I want fine cut, i'll get snus.

Welcome to the world of dip. Although dip and snus are both forms of moist snuff they are very much different animals. Snus is about for the most part unsweetened salty spitless tobacco. Dip is about sweetness and spit.

Copenhagen is an exception as it is quite salty and rich in hickory smoked tobacco.

I use snus 90% of the time but I really love dipping copenhagen and grizzly wintergreen.

Then what you need to try is chewing tobacco, which Clint's character uses in The Outlaw Josey Wales. Not sure if you'll find it, but it's a slightly different form of tobacco.

Mr. Snuff carries Levi Garrett and Red Man, which are by far the two most popular loose-leaf chews in the US, as well as Taylor's Pride----albeit at great cost compared to much of the US. $6.98 for Levi and Taylor's, and a whopping $10.98 for Red Man-----which, interestingly enough, is made by Swedish Match.

Northerner carries a much wider selection at more reasonable prices----before you ship them across the Atlantic, of course...

                  I love skoal,grizzly and copenhagen (mint,wintergreen,natural)

I hate the straight flavor though

I've tried a bunch of dips already but those are the ones I like most.

Chew is also delicious - Stokers apple and peach especially

Never tried mint, but I love wintergreen and natural. I throw in a can of straight once in a while to get my palette back to normal, since I almost exclusively use natural flavored stuff.

My friends think it's hilarious that I chew and dip because they've never seen a Iranian who does!

It's funny you say that because I managed to find some very recently. I was at a very (200 year) old local tobacconist, and as I was picking up some snus I casually asked him about dip. He went "nope can't sell them because of the english warning label, but I got this" and handed me some Red Man loose leaf.

I rarely use it because I spit like a guanaco, but it is very, very good stuff. Sweet and tastes a bit like raisins, packs a punch like no other if you chew it too much. I figured that part out the bad way one morning in the shower

if you have a sweet tooth or just like gum try this: take a peace of bubble gum not mint or anything just bubble gum flavour like you got when you were a child, chew it for little bit then take a pinch of the red man loose leaf and put it inside the gum them continue to chew gum. not for everyone but taste really really good
