Dark Vanilla (snus recipe)

30g - tobacco (dark air cured, de-stemmed, ground)
40ml - water
3g - salt (kosher flake)

dissolve salt in water, and mix with tobacco.
cook at 200°f for two days.

3g - sodium carbonate
5g - glycerin
2g - natural vanilla extract

dissolve sodium carbonate in a approx. 10ml of water. heat as necessary to dissolve completely.
mix carbonate solution with tobacco. combine glycerin and vanilla, then mix with tobacco.
stir mixture well, and allow to cool to room temp.
pack into old gotlandssnus cans, and age in the fridge for a couple weeks.

i just finished it, so it needs to age, but i think i did pretty good. the grind is just right. forms a good prilla, and holds together well. the vanilla is very subtle, as i intended it to be. it comes through slowly, with a little sweetness. i wanted to stay away from liquid smoke, but i think just a few drops would really round it out beautifully. the moisture is a little too high. i expected to lose more during the cook.
i was interested in some input from you guys. i cobbled the process together from several different sources. the ratios seem right, but there are a lot of variables in the process. some people don't cook after adding carbonate and glycerin. some add it in right from the start. it would be awesome to get gn and jimmy in here, but i'm sure their process is top secret.

i updated the recipe a bit. mostly to get the moisture right. first batch was too wet. works great as written now.
i've made a couple more batches, and i'm using this stuff every day. really glad i started doing this.
i've done some experimenting with other flavors. adding a little orange oil is pretty nice. adding powdered cinnamon was not right at all. will have to get some cinnamon oil.
adding cornstarch had an interesting effect. handbaking without it works just fine, but bits stick to fingers and makes it a little messy. with the starch, fingers stay quite clean. it does taste a little different, and i use a tool so it's out for now.

I would stay away from the corn starch. As with any starch it will turn into sugar when kept in mouth. Some years back a few snus manufactures got into some trouble when they made non-tobacco based snus (no nicotine) with a starch type base and it ended up causing some bad gum problems with users. There where some law suits and they ended up paying out to costumers that had some nasty issues with it.

yeah, i used a crackpot. snus goes in a small tupperware container floating in the pot. i've been using it pretty exclusively for the last month. i'm real happy with it, but the tobacco i'm using is a little bitter for my tastes. i hope to try some other varieties in the future.

I'm 1 hour from adding soda and doing final cook now....
I'm stuck at home until after surgery, so no income...perfect timing considering the cost of the few items I had to buy.....
= glycerin and soda......cheaper than 1 tin of general lös @ the store. ;/
