    An English wild tobacco?

Further to posting an old link I was aware of about the history of growing tobacco in my area of England on another forum - I had a look online for more about this interesting history of tobacco growing. And I have found that there is anecdotal evidence of people seeing wild tobacco plants as recently as 1998 in that area.

My interest is definitely piqued by this that there might exist a residual pool of plants from this historical planting in the fields and hedgerows of Gloucestershire ... and I think I might go plant hunting in the next few weeks.

The information I have read stated that the varieties that the first Gloucestershire growers planted in the 1600s was a rustica tobacco - and as such it was very easy to tell the difference between legally imported N.Tabacum from the colony in Virginia and the home-grown illegal rustica. Now knowing the growing habit of rustica, I am absolutely convinced that there's a good possibility that it could have easily self-seeded and grown wild over that length of time given how hardy and prolific it is. If it does still exist ... it would have self-selected and presumably become far more adapted to the British climate over 500 years.

Most of my information was gleaned from this excellent amateur historical website:
http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/Colin/M...accoIndex.html ... it's fairly heavy going with pages and pages of old English legal documents - but with some priceless information buried within.

I think as now would be a good time to identify and spot tobacco growing wild ... I may have a bit of a seed-hunting expedition in the next few weeks. Starting with the footpath which goes between the villages of Hailes and Farmcote - less than 40 miles from my house!

I cannot express how old these plants would be if they actually existed. To compare the first hops planted in Britain to flavour beer since the Roman era was at about the same time that this seed would have been brought to these shores! That's a long time ago!

Reading your post makes me want to try growing tobacco. I live the southeastern US, perfect growing weather here, now just have to sell my wife on the idea....

Yeah - you live in pretty perfect conditions for tobacco - especially for curing it!

Here in the UK the conditions aren't perfect ... but with a little attention to detail it grows well enough.

Like anything to do with gardening ... if you think it will just happen for you if you spend a day and forget about it for the rest of the season it won't work wherever you try it ... but with a little dedication and internet driven learning it's pretty easy.

If you need to sell it to your wife - let them all flower and delight in the amazing blossoms the tobacco plant produces (some of them smell delicious too) ... then harvest the leaf and dry it sneakily in your attic!

Im suprised you can grow tobacco as well as you do in the UK.

We have 3 5x5 areas where we garden, so i can hijack one and call them 'peppers' As for the attic, no one goes up there so im good there. At the end of the day though, if i would actually get a harvest, it would cost next to nothing for a decent amount of tobacco and she loves saving money 😀

Well ... just to let you know ... I never found anything that remotely resembles tobacco!

But I had a few really nice walks!
