Growing my own again in 2015 - starts today

I sowed my seeds for this year's snus harvest today ... I'm aiming for 16 plants each of 4 varieties of regular tobacco which I'm hoping will produce well in my climate and make nice snus. I'm growing Bolivian Criollo Black, Black Mammoth, Amarellinha, and Bamboo Shoot.

As before I just sprinkle a small pinch of seeds on to the surface of the compost in each module.

Then I spray the compost with water, wrap them up in plastic carrier bags to conserve moisture, and put them near a heater in the house to germinate. I'll check to make sure the surface of the compost is damp at all times.

It seems like a small thing to do at this grey and cold time of year ... but it's where all the action starts when it comes to growing your own snus!

Good luck squeezyjohn and Whalen. I'm growing Del Gold, Burley 21 and Prilep this year, about 30 plants in total. I did well with Small Stalk Black Mammoth and a rustica last year. I still haven't made any snus, I think a Raspberry Pi would be a fun way to control the cooking and could also be used to control a kiln.

I can vouch for squeezie's homemade efforts, better than most commercially made products!

I've had my first disaster of the grow! All the seedlings are starting to germinate ... but my 'permanent' marker used to mark the varieties seems to be only 'temporary' ... all the ink dissolved in the water used to keep them moist ... meaning that I am growing 4 varieties and I don't know which is which ... BRILLIANT!

Hopefully I'll be able to tell the difference once they grow up ...

Another one for the empirical knowledge I'm sure you remember to use permanent marker next year.

As it is the first time for me, I am only growing one type. Here is a picture of my 2 week Virginia tobacco: Click image for larger version
