    UK tobacco law update: BAD!

A new law is being put in place to take effect on October 1st 2016 making it illegal to import raw tobacco without registering with HMRC - this applies to both businesses and individuals.

Currently raw tobacco is exempt from import duty and is what I use to make the majority of my home-made snus. If anyone wanted to have a go at this themselves in the UK you need to get in there quick!

The policy paper hints that it will also have seizure powers and doesn't make it clear if this includes whole tobacco leaf purchased before the date of enforcement.

There is nothing explicit regarding home-grown tobacco which has always been a somewhat grey area!

The policy paper can be read here:

    https://www.gov.uk/government/public...tration-scheme

The paper also outlines how much extra revenue money it expects to achieve over the next 5 years at 35 million pounds ... with my knowledge of how much of a minority activity whole leaf tobacco is, I fail to see how they could make anything like this amount! Why, if they made Google pay what they already owe in business tax on profits made in the UK over the past 10 years they could make far more ... always the little guys that get dumped on :-(

No not good, I have a feeling raw leaf would be used for tobacco flavour steeps/extractions in some very popular eliquid.

Just seems like a cash grab to me, to curb smokeless tobacco because of falling cig sales.
