    My homegrown tobacco

Startet out over a few beers last christmas, ordered seeds and here we are.
I live in Norway, so frost will make these indoor plants. Got some in 2 liters, and work is in progress for getting them to 16 liter buckets.
Startet a blog so i can post daily pictures to watch them grow.
Most of it will be snus. But will make some pipe tobacco for the elghunt this fall.

        btw, welcome to snuson
Grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to hide the bodies of the people I killed because they were annoying......

I've been wrong lots of times.  Lots of times I've thought I was wrong only to find out that I was right in the beginning.

I hope you know just how big they will get! Best of luck....I have a basement full of aged tobacco after years of growing. Curing is the tricky part.

I just wanted a few for starters, but small seeds and so on. But i got space for them. In the beginning of April i can start those who can live outside. What is the best way to cure snustobacco ?

Hang it up where it gets warm but ventilated. Read up on curing. It determines so much of the final product.

I can build a little kiln box with heat and a fan. Will search the forum/internet for some good ideas.

It's best if it's air-cured, curing requires that you let the leaf die slowly to start with so that it loses all it's green colour through a yellowing phase - if you let it dry fast to begin with then it will cure green and that tastes horrible (although it's technically possible to use it!) ... once it has yellowed then you want to get it to turn brown and dry as quickly as you can - once it is completely brown and the stems are dry and won't bend then the leaf is ready for ageing ... whether or not you need to age the leaf depends on the variety - but age always helps improve the flavour of a tobacco leaf in snus.

I had great results with a variety called Bolivian Criollo Black which makes a very good single variety snus - it cures much more easily than some other types.

The hardest thing about curing in the more northern places is that it can be hard to fully dry the leaves and stems before the cold wet weather sets in ... and then you will get mould ... I promise you - it's happened to me several times and it's very disheartening after a long season's growing. If you are curing indoors then you should be fine - but I would make sure you get the leaves yellowed completely in a more humid environment before finishing them off indoors because the humidity in a house will normally make the leaf cure green if it is hung up indoors straight after harvesting.

I have some rolled up in a towel now. Just have to try. the unknown cat on youtube uses a barn with open doors east and west for curing. I will follow your tracks in the fall John.
