I am so saving that one.

Where did you get your ammonium chloride? Is it tablet or powder?

I bought a pound of powder from one of small chemical suppliers on ebay.
He does NOT have a current listing for it.

I just got off of the phone with Arm & Hammer customer service, who confirmed their product named "Super Washing Soda" (actually All Natural Super Washing Soda Detergent Booster & Household Cleaner), is indeed 100% pure sodium carbonate, aka soda ash. The local Ingles has a 55 oz box for $3.28.

Thanks jt. The smallest quantity I have so far found is one ounce for $3.25, which means I would probably pay double the price for shipping. I will nose around and probably get a larger quantity than that.

I'll bet you have everything you need without going to the store.
Baking Soda (sodium bi-carbonate + heat from your oven = sodium carbonate)

              http://reefcentral.com/forums/showth...=baking%2Bsoda

If you can't find washing soda you can make your own by baking some baking soda on a cookie sheet for about 1/2 hour at 450 F in the oven.

Guys 300F for one hour will not do it all the time.

You need to preheat the oven to 400F and it's two hours. Just spread it thin on a pyrex baking dish.

I showed Randy this when he was telling everyone to buy Washing Soda. People could not find Washing Soda without perfume in it and were shipping it all over the country to each other. I told him there was no reason to tell people to do all that when they can just make it.

Photographers that work with film do this all the time. It's what they need to fix their film when they are developing it.

              4. Sodium carbonate

Based on my own tests, Arm & Hammer Super Washing Soda is monohydrate form of sodium carbonate. It is probably comparable to technical grade, but it is suitable for most darkroom applications including developers.

Very high quality sodium carbonate can be made from sodium bicarbonate by heating it in a crucible furnace, or more conveniently an enameled pot, with good stirring. The white powder will change its consistency and color during heating. If heating in oven is preferred, use 400F or higher and make sure the powder is exposed to this temperature for long enough. Heating in this procedure can be safely overdone, as long as the container is safe. The resulting sodium carbonate is anhydrous, which is more potent than monohydrate form. This form is hygroscopic, and also readily absorb carbon dioxide gas from air, so keep it in a air-tight container.

I haven't decided what to do with this batch, yet.
                    It turned out like crap.
I don't like the grind, the taste, or the way it sticks together.

I'm gearing up to start making some more snus. I have some foil packets of sodium carbonate from the kit I bought last year. Wondering if I should use it or make a fresh batch? Anyone know if it looses it's kick even sealed up nice?

I don't know if this will work, but we'll see. I did a very coarse hand cut of some Havana 608 and threw it in my "Little Dipper" with some water and salt. This is a very small test batch (20 grams) but at least I got something cooking.

You're slowly getting there snuffy, just watch your moisture level. You don't want tobacco soup.
