    Interesting story about homegrown tobacco

    http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/32482742/?GT1=43001

I know it has been discussed here before, but it looks like we aren't the only ones out there just crazy enough to do it. Looks to be a lot of work, but you gotta do what you gotta do...

I'd give it a shot. I'd probably start with decent cigarette and snuff blends, then try to make snus. Hell, with the huge increase in RYO prices, you might be able to make a living as a tobacco runner :^D

Yeah, these 25 acres of tobacco are for personal use...

I live in beautiful North Carolina. When I first arrived here 14 years ago, it was still the crop you saw 70% of the time. Now, it seems like 80% of that is gone.

But you still see enough of it. Tobacco just likes growing here. So just zero reason NOT to grow my own should it come to that. My ex mother-in-law's Mom owned a tobacco farm for until she passed at 95. Not like I am not surrounded by folks that know how to grow it.

I've thought about growing it, but have always put it off until next year. I'm a gardener and can grow anything, so tobacco wouldn't be that much of a challenge to grow. The main problem I'd have is the time; I travel all the time on the job.

How long of a growing season does it need? We have an "official" growing season of about 120 days. Might be a kinda cool hobby to try if nothing else.

It requires between 120 and 170 days, but you can start the seeds indoors before the last frost just as you would with tomatoes. Then you can plant the seedlings. Could be done.

They grow *some* tobacco in Sweden, you can grow it in NH. Just need to work a bit harder as sundog explained

                      ~~
The best part of the article has to do with a woman who sells the seeds.

Moore doesn't use tobacco herself but has no misgivings about her business.

There was a hybrid strain of Virginia tobacco called DelGold which was grown across Ontario, Ca back in the day. I'm guessing the climate in New Hampshire would give similar results.

Just like everything else nowadays, there's a forum for tobacco growers.

                          Tobacco Talk

I don't think that growing it would be the problem. I researched it a while back. I wrote about it on this forum as well. Like someone stated earlier in this post, it would be treated much like tomatoes because it is related, has the same growing season, and can get many of the same diseases. I would think the harder part would be making it suitable for consumption.

Sounds like a challenge to me! Now to find a place that'll let you buy just a small amount of seeds :P
