Well I’ve been quiet this weekend as I made my first batch of snus. I used a mix of techniques, pressure cooker and a mix of recipes and notes I have read up on, and it’s ok for a first try I guess.

Here it is in the jar to cure in the fridge for the next week. I still have to flavor it with Bergamot and Rose, add humectants, and knead it (maybe…not sure on if I need to knead it)
Its dryer and coarser than a Swedish Match los but holds a pris pretty darn well.
As you can see.
It’s a coarse grind but it tastes like it needs to mature.
Recipe:
100g Air cured burley
95g water
7g licorice root powder
6g salt
6g sodium chloride
Pressure cook for 3 hours and then cool before packing in a jar to cure in the fridge. I added the alkalizer before cooking and the off gassing was rough, but now it smells good…but not like “snus”.
The main thing was to try this and see how hard it was. I struck lightning on the grind, really happy with that. It looks and acts like Landstroms or Gotlands Gul (the original iteration that was coarse and kinda hard to bake) The rest I’m not too sure about. I’ll update in a week or so after flavoring.
I did taste it when it was cool and it’s good if not super mild. Held the pinch for over an hour. Tastes sweet, next time less licorice powder and a bit more salt, but I want to wait before I make any alterations until after I flavor it. I was thinking a Skruf clone, but I might go light rose and heavy bergamot and see what shakes out.
The strength is good, as long as the burley I get is consistent, I’ll be good with this.
Also, this is for fun. I’d hate to have to produce all of my own snus, it certainly is work and the processing of the tobacco to get it from whole leaf to ground took about three hours.
