    Crockpot Snus Oven - Snusugn

Simplified design to encourage more people to make their own snus:

    You need:
1 - crockpot/slow cooker without any fancy controls (no timers, digital circuits)
1 - plastic contractors 2 gang electrical box
    1 - light dimmer
    1 - duplex electrical outlet
    1 - wall plate cover
    1 - 3 wire electrical cord
    1 - oven thermometer
1 - microwave safe sealable container (i.e. Gladware)

The top temperature for snus cooking is 93 °C (199 ° F) so anything that is microwave safe will hold up in a snus oven. I used some containers that my Chinese takeout came in. They are made from the same material as Gladware (Polypropylene). The 24 ounce size is big enough for my batches of 100 grams/280-300 grams finished snus. (In the picture I have the container sitting on top of an inverted pyrex bowl inside the crockpot.)

I control the temperature of the crockpot by use of a plain old light dimmer. This works fine as long as your crockpot has just the plain old manual 2 or 3 position switch (low high warm) if it has any additional electrical circuits it won't work. Just make sure that your light dimmer has a higher wattage rating than your crockpot.

I cook by weight, even though the container seals, I still have some moisture loss so every 12-24 hours I take the container out stir the snus and add back enough water to get back to my starting weight.

This is what 100 grams of tobacco, 110 grams of water and 13 grams of salt looks like before starting the cook:

    Before and after:

Because the gladware containers are sealed (you still lose some moisture from steam) and I'm not cooking a whole lot of snus at once. I can cook indoors without stinking up the house. 8)

    Very simple...

What are you using for the grind?
How do you grind 100 grams of tobacco?
All I can find are the small hand grinders...

I use the coffee bean grinder behind the scale.

      It's a Kitchen Aid KPCG100OB

        great job Justin.
Grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to hide the bodies of the people I killed because they were annoying......

I've been wrong lots of times.  Lots of times I've thought I was wrong only to find out that I was right in the beginning.

I read someplace about using a crock pot to "cook" the snus in. Just don't place it directly into the crock pot itself since then you might end up with the tobacco stuck to it.

                  Crockpot Snus v2.0 - experiment

Same crockpot but instead of using a polypropylene container I'm using a sealed stainless steel canister in a water bath.

I'm using a 45oz container, the one on the left in the picture, it's about 5 inches high

I'm sure all the "big boys" use sealed cooking vessels. I want to see how much of a difference it makes in cooking time, taste and texture.

I'm starting with 100 grams of Stokers tobacco, 110 grams water, 13 grams salt. I'll be checking it in 48 hours.

EDIT : These Stainless Steel Containers are crap. Apparently the Chinese forgot to add in enough chromium, (which is what makes stainless, stainless)
So far I've used 2 containers and both have developed holes.

                      I am in awe.

I think I have plans for my next week off "stay-cation".

                      So cool...

48 hours in, so far so good. Canister works great no perceived water loss, tight seal.
I added in some sodium carbonate, a touch of ammonium chloride (salmiak) and some more water, then cook for 12 more hours.

So much win right there. I wish I had the balls to actually try it out. This pact sh*t gets much worse, this just might be the road I travel...

Why does this sound like a bomb recipe?

                            Sgreger1 made me say that...

Crockpot Snus v2.0 - experiment update:

I am very happy with the results so far. The container seals so great it's a pain in the ass to open. I had to use a butter knife and pry it open just enough to let it burb. It makes the same noise that happens when you open a vacumn packed can of coffee. I added some glycerine to it and put it in the fridge to mature. I got the first prilla in my mouth and for unflavoured and unmatured snus, I am very happy with the results.

                              Step 1:
                              Mix:
100 grams ground tobacco - I used Stokers Dark Fire Cured ( oh noes!) ground to 400 micron
                              110 grams water
13 grams salt ( *update 13 grams is too much salt - use 5 -6 grams salt)
Cook for 48 hours inside sealed stainless steel container in a water bath inside crockpot at 199° F (93°C)

                              Step 2:
                              Mix in:
                              40 grams water
                              7 grams sodium carbonate
                              1 gram ammonium chloride
Cook for 12 hours inside sealed stainless steel container in a water bath inside crockpot at 199° F (93°C)

                              Step 3:
                              Mix in:
                              17 grams glycerine
                              Refrigerate

I don't plan on using Dark Fire Cured tobacco on a regular basis, I just hate to throw it away. When I got my Stokers tobacco I got 2 pounds of each, Dark Fire Cured and Dark Air Cured.

PACT and the FDA can suck my .....
