I finally decided to open this after being discouraged by the label, revealing that "Elmo" seems to be a long-haired dog.
The scent is nothing like that of the dog pictured on the tin. It's a delicious, rich & dark sweetness, like the vanilla-y sap of the Ponderosa Pine. Some component of the scent is similar to what makes Red Crest smell sweetish. The grind is medium-coarse, fairly moist, and the color is a deep brown with sparse little long blonde splinters that make it seem to scintillate. It's almost jet black on its way back out.
The tin was sealed so well, it took several attempts with a metal key to overcome the vacuum.
I'm sorry I hadn't tried this sooner. I give Elmo's Reserve two emphatically flared nostrils (out of two).
