    Berwick Brown

This is an interesting variety of brown (kendal, berwick, otherwise). It really finds the middle ground expertly between a perfumed (not kb) monstrosity like the WoS KB and the more no-nonesense varieties from SG and GH.

There is a citrus flavor to this snuff, one that is both strong and slight, depending on how you look at it: it is slight enough that it does not overpower the robust and heady tobacco flavor that one would expect from this type of snuff, but it is strong enough that it could make this snuff have some crossover appeal to those that find themselves fans of SP varieties.

While I find myself reaching for the "burning tires" varieties of KB more and more, this is a great addition to the snuff type and a delight in-and-of itself. Basically, this is another quality snuff from toque (big surprise). Nothing really earth shattering for me in it, but one that I would recommend to anyone.

I highly recommend this as a 'first try' for beginning snuffheads. Here's why:

1)This is a very, VERY forgiving snuff. The coarse grind makes it easy to take in large pinches.

2)There is very little burn to it, if any at all.

3)It's a bit hard to snuff this too far back, because of the grind. But, perhaps again because of the grind, it tends to get sneezy if you do snuff it too hard. So it's a great snuff to learn technique with as opposed to something like Lime Toast.

4)It has a wonderful, fairly complex aroma that lasts quite awhile.

This is a very interesting and enjoyable snuff. It has a lot of the same citrus and floral notes as an SP, but on a dark, coarse base that adds a masculine, leathery foundation to the blend. Scenting ingredients have been muted somewhat in order to let the earthy tobacco base shine. I agree that Roderick has found a nice middle ground between the traditional working-class Kendal style and the more upscale floral snuffs. The grind makes it easy to take, and the burn is slight (but there is one). I tend to use a variety of snuffs, but if I had to choose only one tin to carry with me for the day, BB would be on the short list.

I've never had any of the true Kendal style snuffs from the SG or GH line so I can't compare but the Berwick Brown works for me. When I was very young I lived on a farm where we had horses to care for and the scent in BB reminds me of saddle soap and tack just wonderful.

I haven't really had any of the true Kendal snuffs myself, but I've had several Kendal pipe tobaccos. I can't imagine the two are that far apart.

Toque Berwick Brown is different than a true Kendal Brown and not as perfumy and sickly as the Sharrow mills versions.

The Toque version has a pleasant balance that I enjoy immensely. A dark and rich tobacco base with elements of citrus and flowers and hints of leather and a light earthyness.....

This has become an all day snuff for me.

If I could only have one snuff it would be Berwick Brown.

Nothing I have tried gives me the satisfaction this snuff gives me.

From the reviews I was expecting an SP but with a darker headier tobacco. The tobacco is there, and I love the easy to take grind, but I'm getting a good deal more of the floral then I would like. Far more then any SP I've had. Its kind of a perfumed soapy scent. Others say saddle soap, but I wouldn't know as I haven't spent a whole lot of time hanging out around saddles. It's a bit clingy for me and wares out its welcome. It's nice on occasion, but it's going to take a long time to finish off the 10 gram can.

It would be nice if Toque would use the same easy to take tobacco base and make a true SP type, or perhaps just a straight tobacco.

They make SP Extra, Quit and natural, I think they will meet your needs very well, can highly recommend the SP Extra.

You may have missed my point. I have tried all three of the snuff you mentioned and use Original and SP extra on a regular basis. The grind of the base tobacco used in BB is different and a good deal easier to take. I actually find SP extra more difficult then natural toast. It may be that my tin is a bit old and dried out, but it is a very fine grind. On the other hand BB is very easy. It is courser and even beginners should have no problems with it. It is probably the easiest of all the toque.

It would be nice if toque use the same easy going grind in a few more snuffs.

Ahh ok you didn't mention that. I would recommend adding some St Clements to the BB then, it should give it the SPness you want but keeping the BB grind. Failing that you cannot go wrong with WoS Best SP, very easy to take, fine but not too fine and one of the best Sps going IMO.
