Irish High Toast No.22

I can describe this quite accurately as a pale tan snuff that smells precisely of smoked ham/smoked cheese.
If you ever get the opportunity to drive around rural France you get beautiful aromas of hams being smoked and this snuff reminds me precisely of that - but I most certainly couldn't do this snuff all the time.

It grows on you after time.

You have to choose. You are either one or the other. There is no in between. And how you choose will determine your place in the tribe we call humanity.

It is no different with snuff. You either think F&T HDT is the best Toast or you think Wilsons #22 takes that honor.

For me I love #22…………….. but HDT is hands down the KING. It is what Elvis would have used while sporting a pris of Grov los and cruising with Mary Ann in a pink Cadillac “all shook up”

That said, Wilsons Toast #22 is nonetheless a really good snuff that I uses almost daily. It seems to be the stock from which the American Scotches descended. If HDT is buttery smooth and nutty then #22 is smoky and woodsy (a bit sharper than HDT but still quite smooth)

Let me try this another way

HDT- smells like walking into a room where fresh bread is baking

Wilsons #22- smells like a campfire

American Scotch- smells like pit BBQ and burns like love gone bad

Toque Bourbon- smells like an American Scotch that went to England for finishing school. A little smoother but the same basic profile (thus a good intro into the genre IMO)

Toque Natural Toast- the smell of a fine unlit cigar

Now after all of that................ if you are still not clear................ you have two options:

1. Go buy a tin and try it for yourself

or

2. Take frosted's advice and go stick your nose on some French guy's ass (or was it a real actual ham he was talking about). Regardless for this option we will need pics or it never happened.

In the end, #22 is well worth a try as its large and loyal following will attest

As I type, I'm preparing to use the last pinch in a 10g can of this. The previous reviewers have pretty much nailed it...I don't think there's anything I can really add. This is a full-on high dry toast, with all the wonders and caveats that a high dry toast brings with it.

Very, very good stuff. I hope I can get more of it at some point.

I keep taking pinches from the 10g tin of #22 I received today, and asking myself why I like it so much. I haven't really figured out an answer yet, but I am enjoying it. It's not the usual type of snuff I go for, but there's just something satisfying about its rather plain smoky flavor with just whispers of nutty and sweet notes in the background. Maybe it's just because the smoke reminds me of campfires and fireplaces, and good times associated with them, or maybe it's the generous dose of Vitamin N. A quality product, pale, dry and fine.

Well, I've taken almost 700g of #22, that's one and a half pound, in a year, so must say I like it a lot. Perfect fine dry snuff in my opinion.

Yuck, the smell of it. Seriously. I much prefer flavoured/scented snuffs.

but..........as long as you don't have a zap gun........I'm fine with your odd sense of smell

I don't think it would be wanted :-s I have been dipping my wet fingers in it and putting them up my nose :-s... i use it in the shower so it will get used.
