    Schmaltzing your Own...

So today whilst at the local Sweetbay grocery store I was picking up some peanut oil for frying and I found a jar of coconut oil. It was reasonably priced, and, I figured I would cook with what I don't mix into my snuff.

I also picked up a can of Tube Rose to help my little experiment.

After I started my Jack Daniels chili, I melted a teaspoon of the coconut oil in the microwave and, throwing caution to the wind dumped in the whole can of Tube Rose. Then I added 3/4 of a can of RR Mills sweet and began mixing. And mixing. And mixing. Then, I sifted it twice and tasted it.

Wow. Moist, coconutty with a pretty good tobacco background. It was still a little warm but tasty.

I have it in a mason jar now to chill for a bit and let the flavors combine.

I was shooting for a Grunt like snuff, but kinda overdid the oil a bit for that. It looks and snuffs more like a Bernards snuff. I want to let it mature a bit and get the oil to absorb a bit before I do anything else to it but I may wind up toasting it a bit in the future.

As for the stability of coconut oil, it melts at 76 degrees F and is shelf stable, no refrigeration necessary.

That sounds awesome, and very clever. German style snuffs are my favorite, so I think that would be right up my alley. I'll definitely be trying this in the future :^)

I was a little nervous going into this, as I really haven't schmaltzed anything before. I toyed with using butter, lard, and various oils but the fear of rancid snuff in my nose stayed my hand. After a bit of research, I came up with coconut oil.

There were some guys on snuffhouse that schmaltzed the Sternecker with real lard and spoke of using thee and buttershmalz and even sesame oil.....but after careful research of oils and melting points and shelf life, and my little experiment today, coconut oil is the one for me.

Also, I have only had it sitting for about eight hours or so and there is definite oil absorbtion going on. If I can keep my nose out of it for a week and let it do its thing I should get a fair representation of the final flavor. The chocolate flavor is kinda changing into a light smoky a bit sweet (from the RR Mills...that snuff is SWEET!) kinda floral coconut thing.....and that natural unsweetened coconut flavor lasts like a champ!

Do this. I used. 08¢ worth of coconut oil and just under 10 bucks worth of American snuff and it looks to be the same volume of 100g of a purchased schmalzer.....though I do not have a scale......I do have 100 g of sternecker to compare it to.

So....just over a week ago I got this stuff on a silpat (silicone baking sheet) and baked it at 170 degrees for about 20 minutes. I let it cool, sifted it and repacked it into the mason jar. I did it to see what would happen.

Well, a week later the coconut is much more pronounced and there is a definite burn to it now....but it is smooth and delicious. The nicotine wasn't really noticeable until I toasted it and, though I thought the oil would run out when I put it in the oven, I was wrong.!

It is much closer to what I envisioned at the outset and it is really tasty.....although rather moist. It is moist, yet crumbly....not really wet per se as in a rappee but it will smear when rubbed....just like a commercial shmaltzer.

Any body got a flavor suggestion for my next schmaltz to try with the coconut oil?

I've tried one of your snuffs before, and I really liked it.

This one also sounds good. It sounds a little strange, but it still sounds good.

                      Keep it up, Monkey!

Maybe some kind of fruit brandy would be good in it. I really like the traditional schmaltzler style of heavy, dark fruit scent, but I don't know how to go about getting it, especially on a small batch, amateur basis.

For that I might have to age my own in a pig skin like Bernard does.

I only use natural flavoring so I would have to infuse the brandy with fruit and then reduce and sauce the tobacco. Sounds like a good idea.....

I also like a coconut curry deal but I am not sure I want that in my nose for an extended period of time.

I might also do a pina colada snuff....pineapple infuse some white rum....

This is interesting, never thought of doing that. Does it change the consistency of the snuff at all?
