How do you not get snuff down your throat?

Like every time I do snuff tobacco, it always travels down my sinuses in to my throat, which is really irritating! I have to clear my throat maybe 15 times to get it all out because I don't know how good it is to swallow it...

Even when I sniff lightly it still ends up there. How do you manage the "problem"? Or do you just don't care about it?

Are there some brands that does not do this? The only brand I have right now is Ozona President, but I tried another from a friend which I can't remember the name of, which was not menthol, and it still went down in to my throat (and almost made me gag, but that's another story about a very weird tasting snuff).

I find one nostril much much better than the other. See here:

With my left nostril it goes down my throat. With the other i can make a pile of nasal snuff on the back of my hand, a mound, and then lower my nostril around it leaving a slight space for air and then very very gently sucking up that one nostril while covering the other.

Sniff very gently. It's a very fine powder (in most cases), it doesn't take much negative air pressure to reach the destination (the foremost part of the nose).

It's something you learn with practice. Even long-time snuffers occasionally end up with snuff in the throat, but with time you will learn to avoid it.

If nothing else works, use the wet pinch technique: wet your finger and thumb before pinching, then insert the snuff-covered digits into your nostrils. Snuff delivery without sniffing at all.

Learned this technique way back when and it works like a charm!!
Otherwise my snuffing days would have ended abruptly.

          For a change-up, I'll occasionally use 2 different blends --
one for each nostril. Can make for some interesting notes.

I take the snuff and add a small amount to my hand (between the index finger and thumb). Then, I put it up to the nostril and take a few light sniffs.

I'll have to try that sometime. Thanks for the tip!

That wet the finger thing is good... i just wet my little finger, dipped it in the snuff, then kept it in my nostril for a few seconds and it worked a treat. Not an all day thing though!

Gotta thank PipenSnus for his concise wording of the technique.

President, being a coarse and moist snuff is great for "stuffing".

Tap some out in your palm and take a pinch. Place the pinch in your nose by moving your thumb back and kinda letting the pinch balance on your index finger. Place it in the nostril and gently press against the septum.

This technique is good for schmaltzer and anything moistened with an oil (as most poschls are).

Also, when you stuff up with mucus or your nose begins to get runny, avoid sniffing and blow directly out. Sniffing after snuff has been in your nose a bit can lead to the snuff and mucus dripping back down your throat and leading to unpleasantness........this here may be your problem as to snuff president directly into your throat is some serious lung power.

The schmaltzer drip is the least favorite drip for me. Try some other grinds and definitely grab a tin of toque, Wilson of Sharrow or any other English snuff to see how that does it for you. They can be more challenging to get in the right place but seem to stay put better ....well, for me at least.

In addition to the great advice already given

You might want to check out the Beginner's Guide to snuff. I think there are a few posts there dealing with this issue that you might find of some help.

You can find the guide here

Dab and swipe works excellent for me. I use this for scotch and toast as well as grinds like Bernard and abraxas. Snuffs such as Silver Dollar, toque, and wilsons don't have the worst of drips, so I just pinch and sniff those. President, gawith apricot, and poschl in general just get tapped out... They don't tend to climb on me as much. I think my biggest issue has been pointed out already here. When the run starts, I tend to give a sniff and it pulls the moistened tobacco and mucus back... I love abraxas and molens, but they have terrible drips.

Thanks for the positive feedback on my advice, but I have to give credit where it's due. I learned about the wet pinch technique from our good friend Roderick at Toque Snuff.

Thanks everyone for your great tips!

I tried the wet pinch method and it worked like a charm! However, when you write "press it with your wet thumb and finger and insert it in the nose", should I stuff my thumb also in my nose? I tried it, but it's too big for my nostrils. Hahaha! Should I just get the snuff on my other finger and use that one instead? And where do I put the snuff? Someone wrote by the septum, is that correct? Is should I put it inside the nose wings?

And also, do you clear out the snuff after a while with a tissue, or just leave it there?

My variation: I use my pinkie finger since it fits better into my right nostril deviated septum.

I lightly wet (dampen) the pinkie finger and dab it into the snuff and then place it in the nostril, covering all exposed areas without going too far back.

No problems yet after about a year.
