Does Scotch Snuff Always Burn a Bit?

So I've been getting into scotch snuff lately and am in the process of putting a sizeable dent into my can of W.E. Garrett & Sons'. Though my technique has improved a lot and it's no longer the tear-jerking face-reddening devil powder it was when I tried in in high school (the trick is to take small pinches held tightly a ways away from the nose and crumble the snuff out while inhaling gently), but I still usually feel a little bit of a bite and have to let out a quick cough. It's not unpleasant and doesn't interfere with my enjoyment at all, I'm just wondering if it's really possible to sniff something this dry and fine in such a way that none of it makes it past the front of your nose. I almost suspect that heavy scotch snuffers have a thin layer of tobacco built up in the back of their nose which helps protect them (I know I do already), and noses used to snuffing generally.

Yea, it's pretty burny. On a scale of 1-100, I'd rate it at 80-90. The burniest I've had is NTSU, but I suspect that isn't supposed to go in your nose. I'd rate that at 95, leaving room for something else, though it is the burniest I've had.

      Burning... nope...
unless you have a sinus issue or something

      Snuff shouldn't burn at all......

Definitely scotch snuff is heavy on the nose if it's inhaled hard but it shouldn't burn..

I read somewhere that even Hitler and a few others used to take up to 10 mg of snuff daily but they took enormous pinches and just plugged the snuff in the nostril while holding their breath.....

I'm pretty sure it's not healthy to get the snuff into your sinus cavities at all OR down your throat

Yeah I mean I'm not talking about a real burn like you get the first time you take a foolhardily confident snort of Scotch, just the slightest nip. When I sniff Poschl snuffs I might as well be sniffing air, I feel like I could snort it with a bill if I wanted to and it still wouldn't hurt, but the Scotches always bite me a tiny bit.

Overall I think I'll be using scotches (and toasts when I get some) for my all-day snuff though, despite the burn they don't seem liable to make my nose runny or clogged, unlike flavored snuffs, and it's strong enough that I never feel the need to take ludicrous and messy amounts. Plus ah goddamn the taste, I can see how people could get sick of that campfire smell but I love it and this Garretts' at any rate has a very fine, silky smooth, cocoa-and-vanilla-y, ettans-reminiscent tobacco base that just really hits the spot. If I woke up tomorrow to find that this was the only snuff still available I don't think I'd lose any sleep, but I sure as hell can't say that about anything mentholated!

I've only had W.E. Garrett scotch a couple of times, it was a little on the burny side if i remember right. I like a good nose burn, i'm with lxskllr on the NTSU, and Taxi Red, those two are the burniest I've had.

You should try Tube Rose. It's a sweet, but it has a bit of smoke, and some nice chocolate notes. That and WE Garrett are my 2 favorite Americans.

South African brand. It's marked as snuff, but it's very moist. I'd bet anything it's meant to be used orally, but I've never tried it that way. It smells like a cat box, and kicks like a mule. The sent mellows nicely though, and it's a very unique experience.

I agree with lxskllr - Tube Rose is really nice.

Superior is the only smoky scotch I currently have but I am looking to get more soon. I am definitely a rookie but I do almost exactly the same as you with the exception that I hold my pinch right up against my nostril - actually the thumb and forefinger go in a little bit - and I don't cough at all or get any harshness in the throat. It must affect the air-flow and doesn't seem to send the snuff as far back.

I sometimes hold it close to the nose too, I'll have to pay attention and see if it makes a difference, though my nose is too stuffed with the snuffing of the day for me to see now. One good thing about starting with scotch snuffs is that if you can sniff them you can sniff damn near anything.

Edit: Yeah it does definitely help. Also what I've been describing as a "slight burn" is really more of a "hard tingle". I really don't think it's getting into my sinuses much, though I think it's impossible to absolutely segregate something this fine in the front of your nose Anyway the long and the short of it is I love my scotch, I've blown through nearly half my 32.5g cylinder in the past three days which I feel is a lot. I just can't keep my fingers out of that damn thing.

Just enough that you remember the hookers name...............

Some snuffs will always burn a little..........and are meant to
When it's my time to go, I want to die peacefully in my sleep, like my uncle did....... Not screaming in terror like his passengers
