    Health Effects of Snuff

Does long-term use of snuff cause nasal polyps like snus causes leukoplakia? I ask because my friend had polyps and he said it was more painful than his chronic back pain, which I know to be severe. He ended up needing 6 sinus surgeries.

Now I'd take benign-but-painful polyps over lung cancer any day but I'm just curious about what long-term effects snuff can have. How about nose-bleeds? Does your sense of smell overall improve or decline? I know smoking killed mine.

Snuff causes changes to your nasal passages, but I don't recall the details. To the best of my knowledge they're non-harmful. My sense of smell is about the same after snuff. It's immediately affected when I have snuff in my nose, but goes back to normal fairly quickly.

A corollary question, how much snuff is too much? If I were to just take a pinch of something strong only when I really felt like I needed a boost I'd probably consume less than a gram a day but when I'm bored and have multiple tasty tins in front of me... I think I've done at least 4-5 grams since I woke up today. Seems like an excessive amount of nicotine is all, I'm not complaining but might it be hard on my ticker?

        a gram a day isn't much

10 grams a day is somewhere between moderate and light. Moderate is how much I snuff by the way so it's diffrent per day.

When you start farting little clouds of dust..............you've over done it..........

Until then..............listen to your body...............if it tells you to slow down...........slow down..........otherwise enjoy

As far as the polyps go..........I have never heard of anything like that..............my guess is that this was a condition your friend was already prone to have............and the snuff exacerbated it

However, without the condition already existing..............I don't think there is any concern over snuff in and of itself causing this

As far as snuff affecting the capacity to smell…………..I certainly have not noticed any problem….. …………..in fact, I find it has actually heightened my awareness to different smells and their components
When it's my time to go, I want to die peacefully in my sleep, like my uncle did....... Not screaming in terror like his passengers

nausea was a big sign in my case that I was over doing it -

a of course serious sinus issues that made me stop it alltogether

These days many Insurance companies offer snuff users the same life premiums as non-smokers.

Statistically, an average snuff user will out live a non-Tobacco user by one day. That one day is down to nicotine and it ability to slow the onset of dementia, Alzheimer's and Parkinson's. It's not much I know, but it's a lot better than a smoker dying on average 8.4 years earlier.

Cancer Research and the Royal College of Physicians state that if every smoker in Britain switched to snuff we would save between 40,-50,000 lives per year. If you do the math based on those figures that's 200,000 + for the USA and over a million people world wide per year.

Another interesting aside, I used to suffer from nasal polyps years ago before I started on snuff. Never have them now and had completely forgotten till it was mentioned here. Knowing my luck they'll come back next week.
