The governments of the British Isles have quite a few of these sinecure positions, virtually all in the name of tradition, such as the Lord Privy Seal and the Raven Master at the Tower of London. All of them rolled together is probably costing the exchequer less than one percent of what the royal family does. I do think though that at least a part of considering oneself English is to maintain psychic connections, however ephemeral, to the realm's glorious, and inglorious, past. One does not have to be as obsessive as Hyacinth Bucket to appreciate these dim winking fireflies of tradition in a turbulent and increasingly fragmented society.
