Your Technique For Useing Nasal Snuff?

Whats your technique? I've seen/heard several ways to consume nasal snuff. What is the preferred way? What is the safest way?
    Thanks for your input. PP

I've used it off and on for 38 years. I put it in my nose. 8)

For the Pöschl snuffs with the shaker box, I put a little on the back of my hand and sniff it up. For normal snuff boxes I either take a pinch and sniff it from my fingers, or I use a silver souvenir spoon(from Finland) and scoop a little out that way.

So no more suggestions? There has to be more nasal snuff users on this board.

I am new to it so no expert, but Roderick from Toque suggests taking it light on the whiffing of it. He said its like smelling a flower. I do that, but before long, i am just inhaling it easily..... Just sniffing it and it goes in. Some people like to use that saline nasal spray but I don't know if its necessary. I don't even sneeze or anything. Its pretty easy.

I use the bullet to measure a little pile on the back of my hand. That I use for one nostril and do another load for the other nostril.

i tend to lick my thumb and index fingertip, take a small pinch and then smear the stuff toward the front of my nasal septum while gently inhaling. I like the cool burn. I'm especially excited to try Toque's non-traditional 'flavors', or I suppose scents.

WOO-HOO!! Pony does it pretty much the way I do. I just touch the snuff with my fingertip to get alittle [and I mean a very little]on it and rub the inside of my nose. Not much need to use alot or to sniff it that way. It keeps it out out the sinuses and is targeted to the area it needs to be in for max effect.

Now someone give me a good reason to sniff it. I'll gladly change my ways if they have a safer or more effective way. Please

That's how I've been doing it; I thought I was the only one! It's pretty much impossible for me to sniff it without going into a choking fit, so wetting my fingers and jamming them up there is the only option for me right now until I get something with a little more moisture content.

I'm using W.E. Garrett, by the way...shit's like sniffing paprika!

I found that sometimes it helps to hold your nose farther away from the snuff when you sniff it. I don't do it too often anymore, but I always liked the traditional pinch sniff.

Due to my tobacco vices, I have a pipe tool and a cigar cutter on my key chain. I use the scoop on the pipe tool to get exactly the right amount of snuff, then bring it to each nostril for a sniff.

AH HA!! I was waiting for your response Mr. TBob. So you don't feel that sniffing snuff gets it too far into the sinisus'? I feel that putting a tad on the tip of my finger and rubbing it in my nostrils is safer. Am I right? I humbly respect your opinion on this subject. Thanks

I use a very small amount. No where near the volume of an entire pea, at stated elsewhere. I use a thin layer about the size of a pea.

Nasal snuff is just an occasional treat for me at the moment and I have only brands on hand, that come in tradional tins (McChrystal's, Wilsons of Sharrow) or in plastic bags (Sternecker from Southern Germany). The "thumb-and-forefinger-method", already mentioned by lxskllr, works perfect for these brands.

Pöschl is most popular where I live, but Pöschl brands were the reason why I never became a nasal-snuff-fan in my youth. I found their brands too one-dimensional and boring (and also free of a nicotine-kick, BTW). I wouldn't give a cent on my own experiences as a schoolboy, with half-developed taste-buds, but still I'm very hesitating to ever buy one of their snuffs again. The "back-of-the-hand-method", also mentioned by lxskllr, is perfect for these specially packaged brands.

                        Cheers!

So watching you guys write about snuff made me order some. I just got it today and tried a sniff. Is it just me or is the nic buzz completely different with this. Snus I can really feel it if its a strong variety, sort of lightheaded almost. The snuff felt more like a caffeine rush, like I had just chugged a double espresso. I liked the snuff but might need to make it an occasional treat instead.

All this talk about nasal snuff makes me think about taking Roderick up on his trial offer...my wife will probably kill me. I have so much tobacco in the house; I don't know how I'll EVER use it all...

madmartigan, you might be like me. Snus and dip kicks my ass and makes me relax. The level from the snuff is maybe less so it doesn't take you to the point of exhaustion, just to the point of energy. Oliver Twists do this for me too, and nicotinic acid said I would like nasal snuff for this reason, because they give a lower nic level. So, thats maybe whats going on. For me, Snus just causes my brain to cave right in and I have a hard time functioning. I don't like getting that nicotine buzz so much. More prefer clarity.
