Self sealing snus bags? Toque snuff needs your help.

As some of you know we have been working on a Toque Snus, a number of flavours of Toque Snus in fact, but we have hit a problem.

We would like to market it as dual loose or with self sealing bags, but our current bag supplier’s attempts at a self sealing bag have failed.

Does anyone have any ideas or know someone who might be able to help?

I guess I need some clarification, do you mean self sealing portion tea-bags or just a large self-sealing bag to ship your loose product?

That would really be a great product, something I have pondered before. If you could produce those little self sealing bags (or maybe a little machine that would seal them  ) you would cut out the need to buy any portioned snus! Think of how much more we would get for our buck! I hate that you get so much less snus in the portion packs than you get with the Los.

I second that, a snus making machine to pack your own los would be awesome. I can't believe there isn't a cigarette glue that you could use for this.

The problem is it has to be self sealing, and food grade. I imagine that cuts down the candidates quite considerably. Cigarette glue is water soluble, so that won't work so well. You might be better off selling a portion making kit that comes with a heat sealer, and portion material. The self sealing scheme is interesting, but I think it would be tough to pull of for a few reasons.

You might be able to do something with a hand crimping tool, where the fibers of the portion material intertwine to seal. I don't know if that type of material would give a good mouth feel though.

Hi Roderick, I have only one question Dear. "why"?

I'd like to offer a suggestion. As you like to utilize ideas that are "outside of the box", why don't you produce both portions and los but instead of offering 45 grams in the los and 24 grams in the portions [like most snus manufacturers] why don't you produce and offer the portions packaged in quanities of 45 grams also. But charge maybe $1 more for the portions.

I simply couldn't be bothered to take the time to pack the portions myself.

edit; nevermind. my suggestion would require a larger tin. so its not practical. However, Roderick if you simply make flavors that are not already produced, that may be quite successful. Like a coffe/vanilla that actually tastes like its namesake, etc.

There are teabags you can get that let you seal them with heat. I am way too lazy to do anything like that with snus and it would be hard to work with the small size.

The best thing I can think of could be a overlap system system on the flat side on the seam that wouldnt actually have to seal but could overlap and prevent the snus from falling out.

Maybe.....reusable bags is the answer so the people can choose themselves.

                        Premium,
It has alot to do with the ban on Snus in Europe. I can't go any further due to Patent law.

I'm not a big fan of loose snus but I do make my own portions out of loose snus quite often. I use tea bags to do it but I can never get the size just right so it's rarer and rarer that I do that.

Now, in regards to this, if I had to guess how snus portions are made I would guess this:

A long strip of portion material is folded over and heat sealed to create a portion "tube".

As the tube is fed down the production line the snus is inserted and a cog like tool is used to heat seal and cut the portion as it comes out of the machine.

Now, for a self "sealing" bag, I bet that would be a challenge. It would need to be a powered device to apply the heat, but there are other ways....

I would be glad to explain my concept to you via PM

                            I don't know if something like a smaller version of this would work;

You could always go for something really, really exclusive.

                              Hand stitched, silk snus bags.
