    Snuffing techniques - my take

After giving this a lot of thought, and realizing that no one really gives a hoot, I still feel compelled to pass on the one most important empirical lesson I have learned from my modestly short snuffing experiance.

You really need to develop more than one snuffing technique!!!! Or more specifically, you need to adjust whatever technique you use to the snuff at hand.

I was thinking about the bump of snuff on the back of Sages hand in one of his posts, and kept thinking that that bump would kill me! Here is the thing, the right snuff, say a F&T Old Paris, yea I could do a big bump of that!

But HDT, Fubar, try a big bump of that and your gonna see Jesus! I use a pinch method with these, take a pinch and them meter it out by rubbing the thumb and finger together, while concentrating on breath control. I can sniff any thing but Dholakia white this way. I just react with my fingers to what my nose is telling me, slow down or keep going. Second nature to me.

Placing a bump on the web of your hand, or back, or where ever, calls for a milder snuff, exquisite control, or just luck, as far as the finer drier snuffs are concerned.

Using a bullet is just a matter of having the right bullet, as far a chamber size, and air bleed, to match the snuff. Good luck finding a proper Rooster bullet, although there are some tough basterds that can take it, I cannot.

I use several techniques, and always start conservatively with any new snuff. Taking too much of any snuff too deep, will really ruin the experience IMHO.

If I could pass any thing of wisdom on to a new snuffer I would implore you to master your technique, and develop more than one. Noting which one to use will come naturally. How many people would snuff more if they only could master the sniff.

I haven't used that many different types of snuff but I have two methods so far. For the American and even the Toques I have been using a pen cap and make a little click in my throat to sniff it. With the Poschl I have been using the back of my hand and giving it a real sniff.

Good point about the "different methods per different snuffs". Pretty much what I discovered in my -bullet thread- and in regards to the F&T HDT vs.s most of the Toques I have tried thus far.

YOU CAN'T REALLY CONTROL THE INTAKE BY THE STRENGTH OF THE SNIFF WHEN TAKING DIRECT FROM A BULLET & ESPECIALLY IN RELATION TO ATTEMPTING A TOAST OR OTHER DRY POWDERED SNUFF!

So my trusty bullet(s) will still be my transport and daily dose storage device, however from now on I will consider what I'm snuffing as per the actual delivery method. I think I will always prefer the -petcock- release of a bullet though to control the measure and avoid spillage when getting the snuff to hand as opposed to opening it @ the other end and dumping the snuff out. Obviously that is just a personal preference though.

Well, as I have posted at least 50 times now, I choose simply to not use any snuff other than moister. courser snuff so of course, it really is not an issue for me. But of course you are right, the one dry snuff I do use, Toques Toast and Marmalade, I use the pinch method, as I do when I occasionally go back and try some FUBAR again.

Since I expect most brand new folks stay away from the toasts when they first start, I generally recommend sniffing from the back of the hand. But as obviously, some new folks seem to want to dive right into the toasts, I think you post was very wise. Folks have to realize that some snuffs simply must be controlled at a much tighter setting, and pinching is the only way I have found to do that.

And LaZeR, my first month of snuffing, I would inevitable have to change my shirt at least once a day for all the tobacco I was getting smeared all over it. But in time, I just learned to be much cleaner and neater. It comes, just be patient.

You know it is a miracle I still snuff! I have made all the major mistakes and discovered many minors. It is a shame really when someone who goes to the trouble of trying snuff gets the technique wrong and gives up. Nine out of ten people who I have had try it try to snort it, then just turn up their nose at giving it a second try. Even after I patiently tell them not to snort it.

Whalen, that is the exact same story with Pipe smoking. In the end, I just figure that these amazing, wonderful, joyous experiences is just left for the people who really want it, the people who take the time and energy to learn something about each. The rest get what they deserve.

As one of the newb snuffers on the block I am still trying to perfect my delivery method. The bullets(while good for transportation)do not seem consitant with delivery. The back of the hand method(while breathing in lightly)has been working the best for me so far. The Wiz!
