Snuff: Some newb questions and post newb questions here!

Was going through a few nasal snuff threads and really didn't see a lot of newb questions so thought I'd start this and post a few of my own newb questions! I just picked up my first tin of nasal snuff yesterday from my local "briarr shoppe". Out of the few tins they carried, I opted for Wilson's Menthol Plus. I can't even put into words the experience of that first sniff into my left nostril, but I will try. One of the most INTENSE burns I've ever felt (it is Menthol PLUS after all). I almost couldn't breathe it was so intense... it was as if I just snorted vicks vapor rub. After a few seconds I could breathe again and what followed was this immediate feeling of total relaxation where my extremities just started tingling and became slightly numb and I just sat there in my car for a second taking it in... It was like that first puff of a cigarette after getting off an 8 hour flight. I went back today and picked up three different types of Porschl (Gawith Apricot, President, and Raspberry. All are wonderful.

So on to the questions! I'll ask some dumb questions so others don't have to. I have been trying to take really light sniffs as to avoid getting it way up in my nose, but that seems to be straight where it goes (nice rhyme).

    1) Regardless of how lightly I sniff, it seems to go straight upwards. I get this burn at the top of my nose, and from what I hear, this stuff is supposed to stay near the bottom. After awhile it kind of seems to slide down into place and settle. Any tips on how to prevent going too far up and hitting that nice pocket? I haven't had it go straight to my throat, and I haven't sneezed yet.

    2) How long do you keep it in? I've noticed if I blow my nose after about 5 minutes, a lot of it comes out. If I leave it in, it sort of cakes and I have to, well, pick my nose to get it out.

    3) About the caking... do you have to clean your nose really well after every use so that the caking doesn't like... cover the whole inside of your nose and the snuff has a place to latch on and be absorbed? My nose is becoming a little raw from the blowing and doing the whole rolling up a wet paper towel and sticking up the nose and spinning it trick.

    3) How often do you/can you use it in say, an hour? How long between uses? Clean your nose out after every time?

    4) I get this very thick mucousy build up at the very very top of my nose. I kind of give it a slight snort to bring it to that area above your throat, then swallow (gross, I know), and what comes down is slightly gritty... I'm guessing that is some of the snuff. I'm assuming this is not good/normal? Ways to prevent?

    5) I've thought about getting a neti pot. For those who don't know what that is, it looks like a watering pot (what you use in the garden) but for your nose. You put it in one nostril, tilt your head, and the saline solution goes in one nostril and out the other cleaning your nose out. Any snuffers tried one of these? Thoughts? Any other advice on how to get this stuff out of your nose?

So that should easily get this thread started. I look forward to hearing all of your responses

1: High up isn't a problem, but it should be short of your sinuses. If it isn't giving you problems the way you're doing it, you should be ok.

2: I keep it in as long as it wants to stay. Sometime a couple of minutes, sometimes forever; it depends on the snuff.

3: I don't do anything special for cleaning. I blow my nose on occasion, and blow it in the shower. That seems to work ok.

4: I use it irregularly. Sometimes a few times per hour, sometimes just a couple of times per day. Every 15 minutes is about right for a full time snuffer ime. Cleaning is per #3 above.

5: You're bound to get some drip into your throat. If it's a lot, all the time, you're snuffing to hard. A little bit is normal. Just swallow it. It won't hurt anything.

6: I've never used a neti pot. Some people swear by them. It's cheap enough to try in any case.

I'm all for the neti pot. In fact, If not for the neti pot, I almost certainly wouldn't use snuff. I initially purchased it as a decongestant to use occasionally and in that capacity it has worked exceptionally well; I now use it 2x/day, and it cleans all snuff debris out of my nose in < 1 minute. It's incredibly straight forward, just make sure you used non-ionized salt and never water by itself.

btrip...I am new to snuff as well(2 months of happiness).I think lxskllr hit most of these questions on the head...as I had asked most of them myself..here are my quick thoughts:

        1. Practice your approach....you will soon find out what works best through trial and error.

        2. If your getting alot of "Caking" Just blow after a few minutes(by that time you should have recieved a good portion of nicotine)I sometimes leave mine in for hours at a time(forgetful).

        3. See 2 and 6

        4. I use a pinch in each nostrel every hour or so(I also use e-cigaretts)Some snuffs have higher nicotine amounts which will require less useage.

        5. As lxskllr mentioned try not to sniff to hard...again some snuffs will just get in the back of the throat regardless. After you get to know your snuffs on a personal level you can adjust your sniff intake accordingly!

        6. I use a neti pot at least once a day(generally in the AM)it really does help to clean the nose out...and additionally help if you have bad sinuses to begin with like I do....you can pick one up at a local pharmacy for under $15...highly recommended!!

Good luck...and happy snuffing!! The Wiz!

I hit the snuff whenever I feel like it. Sometimes every few minutes , sometimes every couple of hours. Snus is my main nic source, but snuff is a nice addition.
If it feels like it's hitting behind your eyeballs it's going to far, just sniff lighter. It has taken me months to learn to pinch properly. I'm a slow learner I guess.
I blow it out when my nose runs. Some snuffs need removed within minutes, some I never need to blow out. Schmatlzers and menthols leave the quickest.
I try not to swallow much of the mucous. It helps if you can train your nose not to snort it up, just let it sit and blow as needed.

I've been thinking of getting one of these but afraid I would end up drowning. How hard are these neti pots to use / adjust to? The idea sounds great in a way but something is fundamentally wrong with pouring water into your nose. :?

LaZeR....I actually have the "Squeeze bottle" version of the neti pot...which shoots the stream into your nostrel. It is a very strange feeling when using it(although I am getting adjusted to it now),I could only describe it as a "Drowning" feeling(of course you are still breathing through your mouth")I actually panicked the first time I used it.The worse part for me is when you get some in the mouth from the sinus drain very salty from the saline mix you use. Not sure if I will ever get used to using it completly....but it is worth the trouble for it's benefits!! I say "Go for it" The Wiz!

I bought a neti pot (only 13 bucks) at a pharmacy today and will give it a shot when I get home. This ought to be interesting

I'll report back to let everyone know how it goes. I predict disaster

Not bad! Took a little getting used to. Relaxing is the key. It started running down the back of my throat but a simple readjust of my head fixed that problem. Did both nostrils, then blew a lot of gunk out and I feel fantastic! Breathing through the mouth took a minute but then came naturally. Your brains seems to want to think it is underwater or something so it is hard at first to breathe from your mouth, relaxing does the trick.

Might also add, at first I thought I was doing it wrong because it wasn't coming out my other nostril.. but I felt the liquid sort of filling up in my sinus cavity... and then after it filled up THEN it started draining. Definitely a weird feeling, but wow, every breath I take now feels so fresh and crisp! TIME TO THROW SOME TOBACCO POWDER UP THERE!

I bought a neti pot a while ago after saying I'd never use one after I saw a video of it, but then again I said I'd never put tobacco in my mouth or use snuff either  Like someone said, you have to breathe through your mouth while doing this or it just won't work and you'll probably start choking yourself. I just use it whenever I feel like it needs to be used, which I guess depends on how often I use snuff. If it's been used alot, I'd say I use the neti pot once a week or so. Also depends on what you're using...Dholakia White is so fine that I don't think it has time to stick to anything, where as stuff like NTSU builds up quickly.

I saw someplace in here that someone said that they take in a breath, and then use the snuff. That way there's not a whole lot of intake left and it doesn't go as far up your nose. I do it that way alot myself and it does make for less throat hitting.

How often I use it depends on what I'm doing and how often I feel like using it. Some days it's only a few times and others it's 10 or 12 times.

I think the "thick mucousy buildup" you're talking about can actually come from certain types of snuff. For me, it's the Dholakia stuff, except for the She Cherry Menthol that does that to me. Must just be something about Indian snuff.
