    I love nasal snuff. BUT...

I am a major nasal allergy sufferer. I haven't used any nasal snuff in over a year because of it, but I'm really wanting to enjoy some again lately. I just placed a small order for a few varieties of Bernards that I've never tried, as well as some of the Poschl snuffs I was a regular user of; Ozona President, Gletscher Prise and Gawith Apricot. Using snuff on a daily basis eventually led to some sinus infections, so I'd like to know if there are others here that have similar sinus problems, but have found ways to enjoy snuff. I plan on keeping my use to no more than a few times a week, and regular use of one of these:

I was using a neti pot, but I found the above device seemed to irrigate my sinuses a little better. You can sort of adjust the pressure/flow as you squeeze the bottle, so (not to sound gross) it seems to me like I can flush more crud out than with the neti pot.

So, my real question, any one else with nasal allergies have any tips/tricks to enjoy your snuff without any detrimental side effects on the ol' nasal passages?

I tend to use snuff in small amounts and only on occasion. I don't use it for nicotine since I always have plenty of that but just use snuff for the enjoyment. I never have any problems as long as I don't do too much or use it all the time. Good luck.

Yep, I enjoy snuff mostly for the nostalgia of the stuff, the method of delivery (something about tapping a bit onto the back of the hand and having a sniff is just nostalgic and cool) and for the scent in the nose. Snus will always be my preferred source of nic. I just wish my sinuses were more cooperative to allow me to enjoy it more!

        I use a Neti Pot.

Also, sometimes I just take a pinch of snuff and rub it onto my septum without sniffing. Gets it in there, and I get the flavor but doesn't go any further. (some snuffs REALLY burn when you do this)

I had my first sinus infection a few weeks back much later than any other year when I regularly get them and this was my first winter with snuffing. Ironically I was holed up in the fiance's the weekend I caught it so as some know my story - WAS NOT DOING ANY NASAL SNUFF FOR THESE 48 HRS PRIOR - along with her daughter was already a week into having one along with bronchitis.

So in my case, I still swear using nasal snuff has kept me cleared out more-so or whatever it does -maybe the tobaccy fights off the bacteria's... who the hell knows. I'm saying +1 to nasal snuff preventing sinus infections.

With that said, I would not recommend hitting the snuff once inflicted with an infection. I think that is just asking for complications along with being difficult to enjoy the tobaccy at that point.

I used a ceramic one until I started using the cheap little plastic bottle I posted a pic of. I actually like it a bit better. Give one a try! You can find them at Walgreen/CVS/virtually any pharmacy.

This is good idea, I'm going to give it a try. I can see how this might be really effective with moist snuffs that stick well.

You might really be on to something. If I understand correctly, nicotine is an effective killer of bacteria. I'm not advocating that people start using snuff regularly to keep their sinuses clean and germ free... but hell, it sounds fun anyway!

I love my Toque, but I use it like once a week. I just have this inner battle going on, I hate having that stuff in my nose. But I love the instant hit, and I really like the scents.

There's been a fair amount of anecdotal evidence of nasal snuff preventing illness. Does it really work for that purpose? I don't know. It would be hard to test scientifically, but there's a couple of mechanisms it can work through. First snuffing causes more nasal secretions, so there'll be more snot to catch bacteria before it gets to your lungs, and there's the antimicrobial property of the nicotine. I could see that helping to prevent sickness.

Tabak- from what you say you used to use, you might want to try some non menthol dry snuffs. I'd reccomend some HDT, Toque Natural, maybe some SP(though they seem to clog me), and others like that. But menthols, which I love, even though I get some nasal issues at times, have a history of negatively affecting sinuses, and the Bernards, while not menthol, are very fluffy and moist, and turned my nose into a running faucet.

Snuff really bothers my nose too. I also like the scent and the effects, but like someone said it's difficult for me to enjoy it in my nose -- I just want to blow it out almost right away. Oh well, I keep trying, but more when I'm drinking and allergies or colds aren't an issue. My girlfriend brought home one of those nasal irrigation bottles you posted. I have never used a traditional neti pot but I can vouch for that bottle, it works great. It's amazing the volume of water that goes through your face and how gentle it is.

I haven't used my neti pot in forever, haven't felt the need lately. The neti pot I got also had a free coupon for one of those squeeze bottles, which says it's even better, I sent for it, and long while later, it showed up, but I haven't tried it.

                        Did you ever consider Uranis?

I've tried a few, Latakia 1860 (which was incredibly good) and some of the Wilson varieties. Even though I get the sinus-rebound effect from mentholated snuffs, I still seem to tolerate them a bit better than the other dry snuffs. I'm definitely excited to try the Bernards products. A running faucet nose almost sounds like relief! But we'll see how I do with them. And definitely give your squeeze bottle a try.

Yep, they're great. I bought a more expensive neti pot than was necessary, and turns out this cheap little plastic bottle is worlds better.
