German snuffs tend to be on the moist side, and favor an oil base, as opposed to water like the English makers use. They also heavily favor menthol, and I'd guess that 90%+ of the German snuffs have menthol of some kind. I'd say the German snuffs are some of the easiest for the beginner to take, as long as small quantities are used. You won't get a lot of nicotine, but they shouldn't go too high in the nose, and they're mildly, and pleasantly scented. My top 5 German picks are...
Pöschl Gawith Apricot
Bernard Doppelt Fermentiert
Bernard Wise'n Pris
Pöschl Gletscherprise - not my favorite, but I think it's the largest selling snuff world wide
Bernard Zwiefacher
One thing I also tried, and still do sometimes, because it works, but it can be a little messy, is to pinch some snuff, and literally stick in your nose and rub it around, not using the sniff at all. You'll have to experiment with what works best to do this, usually the snuff is on my thumb tip, which I rub on the inside of the outer side nostril parts.
I rub it on either side of my septum sometimes but it has a tendency to burn.
another perfectly sound vendor and THE place for Samuel Gawith bulk
I had them on the list originally but was having to do so much cutting to get the post in under the maximum space allowed. But now I'm able to edit and add bit by bit so they are back in.
Thanks bro

I still can't believe you haven't fit in F.U.B.A.R Grunt anywhere in the top rundown listing. C'mon this snuff is like dried 'P-tang' ground up with coconut and pure nicotine. I dig it's camo tin to, matches my hanky. This is a real man's snuff and comes in so handy during those 'lonely' times.
PS: Thanks for the following quotation. I might just be able to get somewhere with this line. (see thread: "How to convince fiance'...")
I know this may sound crazy, but I wonder if snus is basically a low risk substitute for dippers and snuff for smokers...?
I, myself a former smoker find myself more attracted to snuff than snus. I just basically lost my taste for snus and started snuffing more and more. A month ago, I'd never thought that would ever happen.
I would not call it a "substitute", it's just another form of tobacco, but since it is way healthier than smoking, it can be a substitute for those that want it to be.

I think there is a lot to what you say (not as an absolute rule by any means-- the number of x-smokers here on the forum show snus to be a VERY effective substitute for cigarettes). However, the nicotine release in snuff seems to more closely mirror that of cigarettes than does the nicotine in snus (snuff is more of a quick hit. Snus is more of a steady level). Likewise, the ritual of snuff offers a good replacement for the ritual of cigarettes. I also think it may come down to whether smell or oral fixation took a predominant roll in the psychology of your cigarette usage.
Regardless, I think in the end it is a matter of the individual. What works best for you. Thus I recommend trying both (it can't hurt to have as many tools in your arsenal as possible).
I also think for most it will not be an either or decision. Snus for me is my mainstay. Snuff is my aroma therapy (as I think f. bandersnatch so aptly put it). However, I do find that snuff is exclusive far more among x-smokers than it is among x dippers. So if you are a smoker and are having trouble getting into snus (and have given it a fair try) do not despair, snuff may be your answer.
Thanks for the post BP

Most of the advice you are getting here is good and I have to agree that Bullets are not for beginners, however don't let these old hands steer you toward the toasts or trickier snuffs just yet.
I recommend Peppermint, Chocolate and Vanilla as the smoothest and easiest snuffs to start with.
For beginners try the wet pinch technique as this adds weight and helps keep the snuff in the front of the nose. Lick/wet your finger and thumb take a big pinch, let it warm a little and gently place it, rather than sniff it, on either side of the septum. This method works well for beginners and helps reduce sneezing.

Sniff very gently. It's a very fine powder (in most cases), it doesn't take much negative air pressure to reach the destination (the foremost part of the nose).
It's something you learn with practice. Even long-time snuffers occasionally end up with snuff in the throat, but with time you will learn to avoid it.
If nothing else works, use the wet pinch technique: wet your finger and thumb before pinching, then insert the snuff-covered digits into your nostrils. Snuff delivery without sniffing at all.

Sorry for all these threads, but i have many questions! And some other people may be wondering same things than me...
Back to the subject: I have read everywhere that you have to breathe in really lightly. The problem is, that i am breathing really, really lightly, but the snuff still will fly to my sinuses and throat. I am not expecting any magic trick response from anyone.. Im just wondering what i'm doing wrong here.

Close the airway to your throat, hold your breath and drop your lower jaw and tongue while keeping your mouth closed.
Do it once or twice without the snuff, try it with the snuff and report back.
If this doesn't do it I don't know what else to suggest.
