How do you store your snuff?

This question have been raised time from time. I know most people opt to freeze their snuff, but folks, In my humble opinion, that's just crazy. It isn't a fruit, vegetable, milk or even snus in that sense. Most snuff is dry anyway (so I suspect). Most people I talk to in UK find freezing their snuff unheard of. Even the German Schmalzlers holds well in their little tap-out boxes.

I find the best way to store snuff is in a air-tight container in a dark, cool place works the best. I use the plastic containers that you get in a dollar store for a buck. Holds up well I might add. I keep all my snuff in my night stand drawer.

I noticed that WoS's half pound drum is air tight as well. Having snuff in that volume shouldn't be opened every time you want a pinch. You risk losing the aroma after going through half the drum. In that matter, I find the "tier" system works well. Filling up 4 or 5 empty, well wash tins with the product, using all those first before refilling and continue the tier step. It will keep your drum good, fresh and last a few years.

I just keep them in the original tins. No problems yet. Nothing ever really dries out here on the coast though. Good advice about the larger tins potentially losing flavor.

Great thread and I think ultimately absolutely correct.

Air tight sealing in an environment with a fairly constant temperature is all that is needed and is especially useful when the snuff is in bulk.

For me though I have a lot of single tins that are extras. Thus having 8 billion Tupperware containers would not be that practical. For a while I had my extra stock boxed and in my closet. However after taking part in a box pass where there were some really old WOS SPs and seeing how those SPs had broken down past the point of resuscitation. I decided to stick my surplus snuff in the freezer.

Now freezing may not be necessary and it WILL get you laughed at by some of our European snuffers.........but in the final analysis it is not going to hurt the snuff and it will keep the snuff fresh for an extended period of time.

Thus if you have bulk air tight might be the way to go. If you have a lot of individual tins (especially scented or moister snuff) you might opt for freezing.

Regardless I think BP's tier step idea is a great one and will help keep your bulk snuffs fresh.

I have 2 cigar boxes I keep my tins in, in a drawer of my desk.

I read that some people keep their snuff in the refrigerator......why?.....

I wouldn't want to take the chance of subjecting my snuff to "other" foreign odor. I'd rather have my snuff dry out than to have it smell like...onions. No ideals here Roderick (lol).

I would think that cold storage would be unnecessary with snuff because the moisture content is so low to begin with. That being said, I was keeping mine in the freezer, but I had to move them due to space constraints.

I was thinking about turning one (or two, the way things have been going) of my desk drawers into a humidor. Your thoughts?
