I smoke my pipes a lot less now than I used to but still enjoy a bowl about once a week. Don't worry about keeping it lit at all, just tamp regularly and if it goes out from time to time it doesn't matter. I'd also recommend trying something other than aromatics; a good tobacco store will steer you the right way.
I smoke a pipe and have done so daily for many years. My smoking habit has always been pipe smoking, never cigarette (have smoked a few in my lifetime, but never habitually; and I smoke the (very) occasional cigar).
I have used snus to greatly reduce my pipe smoking (and increase my enjoyment of life at times and places where smoking is not permitted) but I still smoke a pipe daily and intend to continue doing so.
Don't worry too much about your pipe going out. It is normal for a pipe to need to be relit several times during the smoke. Keeping it lit for longer periods is a skill you will develp with practice. One tip is to make sure that your pipe is not packed too tight or too loose--after you pack your pipe but before you light it, you should puff on it a few times. You should be able to draw air through it easily, but it should not feel like you are sucking through an empty tube. If it is packed too tight or too loose, empty it out and repack it until it feels right.
The best way to pack it is to use 3 pinches of tobacco--put one in, then tamp it down a little; then put another pinch over that and tamp it down; then put the third pinch on top and tamp it down.
Then puff on it a few times as mentioned above to make sure it is packed just right. If not, repack it until it is.
Then light the entire top surface of the tobacco. Then tamp it out and relight it. This is known as the "false light" or "charring light." It will help the tobacco burn more evenly during your smoke.
One more thing should the tobacco be more loose or pressed in the pipe ?
I might be putting too little tobacco in.
Well, that is the tricky part. You want it to be not too loose but not too tight. When you press down on it lightly with your finger, it should feel a little "springy." It's really hard to explain, and something you just have to practice and get a feel for. The best way to see if it is packed too loose or too tight is, like I was saying, to just puff some air in and out a few times after you pack it. And if it doesn't feel right, then empty it and start over.
