    Pipe smoker here.

precious007, you can find some good information for beginning pipe smokers here: http://pipedia.org/index.php?title=P...ing_techniques

You can also read reviews on a wide variety of pipe tobaccos here: http://www.tobaccoreviews.com/

I started getting into pipes and cigars a couple years ago when I quit ciggs with snus. Kinda started a tobacco diversification program. There's a lot to the art of pipe smoking. I enjoy it very much but don't really do it a lot. There are some great pipe tobaccos out there and the variety is enormous. Some also age nicely and can store forever if jarred up in mason jars. I probably have enough pipe tobacco to last me a lifetime but I'm in no rush to smoke it up. If I ever got desperate for snus I could make snus from it although it has been cured so it probably would have higher TSNAs than snus. It's kinda reassuring to me to have pounds of tobacco around. Enjoy!

I smoked a pipe years ago and I still think it's the best of all smoking options. If you try it for awhile and think you'll stay with it, invest in a good meerschaum pipe. They take a long time to break in, but it's worth it. I smoked one for years until it was that deep amber color they become (they're made of a kind of white clay that slowly picks up a golden color from the smoke). Stupidly left it behind somewhere on the long twisted path I took after leaving the military in 1989. It's a smoother and cooler smoke than other pipes. But if you're going to smoke daily, get a few different pipes to rotate, it's not good to smoke the same one too often because they need to dry out between smokes.

Thanks PipenSnus will check it out.

Yesterday I had another small trouble with the pipe. I guess the nicotine and salive goes down into the pipe and while I was smoking some kind of nasty juice came into my mouth.

I guess my saliva goes into the pipe, I should avoid doing that ??!

I was about to throw up. LoL

I do have a couple tobacco pipes; a GBD and a Lorenzo.

I tried it for awhile some years back to quit cigs. It never
caught on for me. I would recommended you get at least
two pipes to rotate. I first bought only one and burned it
right through trying to quit cigs.

                @Joe234

In my opinion Pipe is nothing like cigarettes, it's a completely different beast that I wouldn't be able to smoke daily anyways.

I might be wrong, but the tobacco is way too mild for me and I already started coughing (but it's a nice habit for the weekend or maybe the most one time a day)

I'll surely buy a new one when I get the ocassion, tobacco too.

I think I could do a pipe now since I'm off the direct nic hit that cigs deliver.
However I'm not eager to develop this habit now.

The true way to smoke a pipe or cigar is not to inhale. You get something like
20-30 % nicotine absorption through your mouth where inhaling any tobacco
delivers over 90% nicotine, I believe.

Also you want to break in a pipe by filling half bowls at first and working up.

How to Start Smoking a Pipe
                  http://pipes.priss.org/howto.php

If you are smoking a brand-new pipe, it will need to be broken in. Smoke only half bowls for a while (at least 10 times or so) until you start getting some carbon buildup on the lower sides of the pipe's bowl. Try to smoke to the bottom as much as possible to get this carbon cake built up and your pipe will smoke much better later. On the other hand, if at any time your pipe starts to taste nasty, stop. Pipe smoking is always supposed to be pleasant and there's no reason why it shouldn't always be so.

I've tried inhaling a few times but the tobacco is way to mild, it even hurts in your throat.

I suppose a much ligher tobacco would work fine.

Well the pipe's more for the taste/scent/aroma rather than inhaling all the smoke as you woud do with cigarettes.

It's too mild so it hurts your throat? I would think if it were too harsh it would.

The pipe is for nicotine delivery through the mucus membranes of the mouth without inhaling.
Same with a cigar. I know a friend who once smoked 8-10 cigars a day. He cut down to 1 or
2 a week after his bypass.

Read here about Sigmund Freud's struggle with cigar addiction:

                          Hey Joe..

I like the Pipe ... but it's too harsh for me ... Yeah I think I got the wrong word.

It hurts in the throat and gives me heaches when inhaling the smoke.

The same with the hookah (I think it's mainly due to the high levels of carbon monoxide.

Well, Freud must be one of the only few that smoked 20 cigars a day :| (He eventually got mouth cancer)

I've seen people in Italy way back when I was living there that smoked like 10 medium cigars a day ...

Your not "supposed" to inhale pipe tobacco, but you can, it's probably because it's an aromatic so the casings are irritating your throat. Inhaling smoke from a pipe puts you at the same or higher lung cancer risk level as smoking cigarettes so something to think about.

It's not a pleasant feeling at all.

The smoke irritates your throat instantly not to mention the coughing.

If your talking about when not inhaling, your probably dragging too hard, you're supposed to "sip" on the pipe and if you smoke it too fast the smoke gets hot and burns your tongue and if you drag hard enough throat.
