I've taken the pipe back up--just 1 or 2 bowls a day--after putting it down for several years. I needed to quit smoking cigarettes, and it ended up that pipe smoking needed to be part of that. It's a real pleasure now, though, since I am smoking it simply for enjoyment.
If you like Mac Baren, you should try their 'Dark Twist'. It's a simple Virginia/Cavendish blend that comes in a roll cake. Pretty nice smoke.
For me, it's a meerschaum Churchwarden full of McClelland 'St. James Woods'.

I considered my pipe to be the best nicotine delivery vehicle but then I found snus. As for pipe tobacco, I would recommend MacBaren's Stockton, Navy Flake, and Virginia Flake along with the Dark Twist. Gawith's Full Virginia Flake is very nice but often sells out so can be hard to find at times. Both Bull's Eye Flake and Luxury Twist by Peter Stokkebye are very good smokes. You cannot go wrong with McClelland's St. James Woods, either, that was an all-time favorite of mine.

I've always kinda found McClelland's English and Oriental blends to be kinda middling, myself. But when it comes to matured Virginia and Virginia/Periques, McC is very difficult to beat.

But, it does seem to carry some cardiovascular risk similar to smoking. And, head and neck cancers are not uncommon in pipe smokers. I remember reading some years ago that Keith Olbermann(of TV News fame)had to have a small tumor removed from his soft palate, which had developed precisely in the place where the mouthpiece of his pipe usually rested. The tumor was benign, but he still quit immediately.
So the safest way to smoke? Probably. But certainly riskier than oral tobacco or nasal snuff.
