Thinking about smoking a pipe more often.

Thinking about smoking a pipe more often. Anti-tobacco fascists levying impositions on snus making it harder to obtain, more expensive, etc isn't helping and i'm missing the cafe culture; sitting out with a coffee whilst tobacco is smouldering.

I want to travel. And it would be hard for me to source a fridge for my snus from hostel to hostel. Which is a big reason. As is only liking Skruf Stark out of all the snus available to us EU folks.

Will see how things go. Once i get the clutter in the house cleared out i will have more time to smoking my briar pipes. So the next few months may well be a transition for me into pipe smoking.

Pipe smoking isn't as harmless as many would lead you to believe. 100% of the full time pipers I knew(all 3 of them :^D ) got smoking related diseases. You seem especially interested in the harm reduction aspect, so that may be a concern for you. I'd be leery of puffing a pipe all day, but occasional use shouldn't be a problem.

So, are you giving up nicotine, or do you still get some nicotine while it's in your mouth ? I don't get the whole pipe thing, seems like lots of money on tobacco if you don't get any nicotine, or have i got it wrong.

You get nicotine, sometimes a ton, but the appeal for me is the process of smoking, and the flavor of the tobacco. Pipe smoking is very ritual oriented. There's nothing quick, or convenient about it. Imo, it's best for reflective times when you can take the time to watch the world go round.

You definitely get the nicotine. Much like cigar smokers don't inhale into their lungs but still get the nic.

I hear you lx - it is a bit of a concern for me. Snus not kept in a fridge for a month or two would have its TSNA levels increase though wouldn't it (?) so could/would be just as risky.

someone just said this to me re pipe smoking:

Depends on whether you inhale the smoke. If so, might be just as hazardous as cigarette smoking. If not, risk reduction of ~50% compared with cigarette smoking. Snus, of course, reduces risks by up to 99% compared with smoking. Have you considered Stonewall dissolvable orbs? Very portable. Can be used in places where briar pipe smoking would not be permitted.

that's good to hear mate! sounds fun.

would be interested to read any studies into tsna levels on snus storage if anyone has any...

That might be somewhere in the ballpark, but I'd guess a pipe would only reduce risk by ~25%. You'd reduce many of the lung issues, but equal, or increase oral cavity issues. Pipe smoke is heavier, with more harmful processing in many cases(highly smoked flue cures), and heavily added flavor(made from what?). You tend to smoke a pipe fewer times, but the amount each time is greater, so I don't know how that shakes out. Since a pipe is more of a PITA to smoke, there's less chance of going overboard with it like you can with cigarettes. You can grab a cigarette any time, and it only lasts 10 minutes. A pipe takes much more of a commitment, so a bowl or 2 a day is less likely to lead to full blown smoking.
