    Pipe Smokers

Any pipe smokers here? I find when spring and fall arrive that I enjoy smoking a pipe more than usual. I like a strong English tobacco, and after Dunhill went away (I'll miss Night Cap the most), I had to find some new stuff to smoke, which led to the Samuel Gawith brand. 1792 Flake is my current fave, followed by Brown Rope No. 4 and Black XX Rope. There's nothing like drifting off into a smoky la-la land with these tobaccos, accompanied by a cold ale and some chill tunes, or outside in nature.

And after struggling with the logistics and expense of various finer pipes I've discovered the simplicity and joy of a good ol' cob pipe. The Missouri Meerschaum General is my current favorite.

I love a bowlful on the front porch in an evening. I use a few different pipes, none of which are high or even medium end pipes. Tobacco I get from my local shop out of their bulk cans. I lean towards the English Cavendish types. I see no point in buying a $200+ pipe to smoke $10 worth of tobacco a month in. My cheap, sometimes used, pipes and good tobacco make me happy and the enjoyment is the whole purpose.

I smoke a pipe, but primarily in the fall and winter months. When it starts getting gloomy, that's when I bust out the ol' briar and start puffing.

During the spring and summer, I rarely smoke my pipe. I don't like smoking when the weather is even remotely warm.

Count me among passionate pipe smokers. I began puffing a pipe way back in college, and kept it up for years before yielding to just cigarettes. When I finally quit cigarettes in 2007, I rediscovered my old pipes.

          And bought some new ones.

In fact, I kept buying on eBay until I had 46 of them! (It's easy to get carried away at all the styles and filtration methods; I finally filled every slot in my in rotating pipe holders).

I've been through a variety of tobaccos and have decided the FDA will soon make it necessary for me to buy from a local tobacco store (taxes, etc). So I settled on locally available Carter Hall (no tongue-bite burley) and a variety of special orders from online shops. If I have to, I can live with just Carter Hall.

Currently, I do five pipefuls a day. And, yes, I often have a snus in place as I puff the pipe. Interesting flavor mixes, sometimes.

I love pipes almost as much as a good cigar. The two have their own unique character, and both are quite enjoyable for me.

Currently I've got four pipes. Two my dad gave me after his stroke when he had to quit smoking them, another gifted from someone when he found out I go to The Citadel, and the last one was a basket pipe I found that I liked.

I haven't tried too many English blends yet, sadly. I guess I'm still pretty new to pipes and have only been smoking aromatics mainly. I'd like to branch out though, but I will miss the wonderful scent that the tobacco I have currently gives. It's called Trout Stream and is a mix of golden and black Cavendish. I mixed in a little latakia as well, and it blends well together and gives it some spice.

I smoke the pipe all day, every day, any time of year. That's not entirely true. While at work, I use snus

                My favorites are (in order):
                - Orlik Golden Sliced
                - Three Nuns
                - Mac Baren Navy Flake
                - Orlik Bull's Eye
                - Capstan Original Navy Cut.

For everything pipe, you'll usually find me ranting on (shameless self promotion) - http://my-pipes.net/

I've been smoking pipes for about 15 years now, and enjoy them quite a bit. I mostly smoke virginia/perique blends, although I enjoy english blends as well. My current maintstay smoke is Samuel Gawith St. James Flake (probably my favorite va/per).

P.S. I heard recently that Dunhill has found a new U.S. distributor and that the line will be re-introduced this summer (I assume at the August RTDA show), so there's hope that we will be able to get Nightcap again soon.

I went through a pipe smoking phase about 7 years ago, still have my pipe actually. This thread has inspired me to get back into it. I think I'm gonna have to pick me up some pipe tobacco in the next couple of days.

Anyone have any recommendations as to good tobacco to pick up for a novice? It's been a while for me.

Most tobaccos will do, but if you're headed to your local store, you will probably see things like Prince Albert, Carter Hall, Walnut, Rum & Maple and Half 'n Half on the shelves. All of those will do quite nicely.

They're all easy to pack and light. All of them burn nicely and are not overpowering in any way.

Other than that you can't go wrong with Stokkebye blends (Luxury Navy Flake, Bull's Eye Flake, etc)

Personally, I have been smoking a LOT of Half 'n Half lately. It's excellent stuff.

Also, as it's been a while... I should be lighting with a match correct?

You can use molten lava if you prefer, but a butane lighter like a bic, some matches or your favorite Zippo will do just fine
