Best place to buy tobacco/tobacco suggestions?
      Any accessories needed?

I'm going to get an order in today and get going on it.

      -----

This is some info I read, is any of this accurate?

      Pipes to buy (Types)
      Briar Pipe - Beginner
      Meerschaum - Cool mellow
Corn Cob - Many prefer over Briar pipe

Quality pipes - Bari, Peterson, Nording, GBD or Stanwell.

      Types of tobacco:
Virginia - Delicate fruit like, sweet
Burley - No sugar, full flavored
      Spice - Oriental, Latakia, Perique

      Must have accessories -
      Pipe Cleaners
      Wooded Matches/Butane Lighter
      Pipe Tool (Czech)
If you have never smoked a pipe, buy a Corn Cob and see if you like it.
If you are sure it will be OK, get a Briar and stick with that.
      Forget the Meerschaum.
If you want an easy cool smoke, try a filter pipe. The 9mm euro style filter pipes are best. Make sure you buy filters! They are nice. No bite!

As for Tobacco. Try Haddo's Delight from GL Pease.
Watch the all virginias they can burn really hot.
I like Latakia, but would not recommend right away.
I am no fan of Burley. It is the "cheap filler stuff".

Buy the "pipe" lighter that the flame comes from the side.
You can get an insert for a zippo to make it work. Good ones are $15 or less. Best ones can be hundreds. IM Corona is one of the best I have tried and it is around $90.

      You need the other tools.

Good, luck it is really a nice way to pass time...

        1. Fill the bowl to the top and then press down on the tobacco lightly, as a child would.

        3. Then fill the bowl once again to the top and then press down on the tobacco very hard, as the father might do

Any input on what you guys do?
        Sounds fine.
I just do the first 2 steps.
Then do a "charring light", bring the flame around the tobacco then a puff or two and then tamp it down. You need a tamper. (it goes out)($1.50)
Then relight it all the way. Puff slowly.
Should be good to go and will be second nature.

Get the book 20th Century Pipesmoking by Richard Carlton Hacker. It gives you all the details.

Mike at Mars Cigars and Pipes is a nice guy and he is in PA, ships fast.
He also has a nice little snuff collection. Tell him at the end of your order that you are new to this and if he can send some samples of other tobaccos for you to try.

Boswell's makes some great pipes that are affordable:
            http://www.boswellpipes.com/

But just start out with a bunch of corn cobs like others have said. My local Rite Aid sells them or go straight to the source:
            http://www.corncobpipe.com/

You can usually try out tobacco at a local tobacconist shop.

I've known 3 full time pipe smokers in my life. Every one got cancer, and one of them got emphysema on top of it.

Which is why this is a hobby, not a full time thing, for me. Just something to do a few times a week. That's the way I'm approaching it.

                      McClelland- Christmas Cheer 2009

These sound pretty good. I can picture me in a robe by a fireplace, with this.

                        Pipes and Tobacco

YOU DON'T INHALE THE SMOKE. It will screw up your lungs. The occassional inhale will not hurt you. Too much and your in trouble. Thier are blends out there that your membranes will take in without inhaling. They will knock you down. Pipe smoking is meant to be pleasant. You smoke for the taste. If you are just starting out, get a corncob. That way if you dont like it, your investment was ten bucks. Use a pipe cleaner as you smoke. Smoke slowley. Learn how to pack. If it goes out relight. Dont get frustrated. Enjoy!. A cigar is nice but expensive and you have nothing to pass on to somebody when you go. If a pipe gets hot you are smoking too fast.. I love my snus, but a pipe is different..................Any questions?

I just picked up 5 corn cobs and a house sampler from a semi-local shop. The guy was cool, I told him I was a noob and he set me up with 5 2 oz bags of mild aromatics (some cherry, vanilla, rum, some sort of chocolate and butterscotch). They're house blends, and might not be that great (haven't lit up yet), but I just want to dip my toes in. And for less than $30, I ain't gonna complain.

Even if you go on the strict principle that you'll never inhale you still do. Fact.

I'm really excited. I'm just waiting for someone to come over and make cracks about my corncob pipe. I was singing "Frosty The Snowman" the whole time I was ordering. haha.
