    looking for some pipe recomendation

i think pretty soon (maybe waiting until its warm enough outside to enjoy it on my porch) im going to walk down to the smokeshop and pick up a pipe and one, maybe two bags of tobacco. what im looking for is some input on some good, yet inexpensive beginner tobacco recommendations. also a good pipe recommendation. i dont want to spend an arm and a leg, and i dont want to peruse smokers forum for 5 hours, so i was wondering if there was an easy answer for this.

A corn cob is a good starter pipe, and so is a Dr. Grabow. A good starter tobacco would be Prince Albert or my favorite, Carter Hall. It is good to get started with a burley tobacco until you get your "puffing" technique right, because the chance of tongue bite is lower with burley. Once you have your basics down ( packing, lighting, etc)...you can expand your tobacco choices. A good place to really start is go to Smokers Forum and read the Newbie section

I'll echo what others have said. A corncob is dirt cheapp, and smoke amazingly well. A Dr. Grabow is a decent, inexpensive briar. Moving up the ladder, and you decide you want a really nice pipe without breaking the bank, Savinelli's are amazing pipes, about $100 most places.

Start with the Prince Albert or Carter Hall, again, just to see if you even like it. If you do, Brittish Woods is my current favorite English blend. And MClellands Virginia #14 is a great Virginia blend.

But start slow, see if you like, go from there.

And I will also echo the recommendation, go to SF, read the newbie section, was a major reason everything went so well for me.

Ya pick up a few corncobs they are very cheap. Don't buy them at the smoke shop if they are over 5 to 6 bucks. They are cheaper online then that. You'll want more then one because its easy to bite through the cheap stems. Also don't judge if you like it or not after only 1 or 2 smokes, corncobs sometimes have a weird aftertaste for the first smoke but it goes away quickly.

Listen to what everyone else said, and think about asking the guy at the smokeshop about trying a variety of different types of tobacco's. There is aromatics, english, virginia blends to name a few. Try to get one of each, and the good thing about corncobs is that you can try a variety of blends and also the pipe requires no break in at all. If you get a briar you will have to work on breaking the pipe in and worrying about blends mixing flavors with each other.

So in short don't buy a briar yet and buy a few different types of tobacco as well as pipe cleaners, oh and puff slowly so you don't get tongue bite.

And most importantly visit tobaccoreviews.com for excellent ideas on tobacco to look for. Hope this helped.

When i started pipe smoking i was at a loss where to start as well.

I would say the best thing to do is go to www.boswellpipes.com

JM and his son Dan are pipemakers and custom tobacco blenders. They have handmade paipes that are in all price ranges and the highest quality.

They also make the absolute best tasting tobacco blends and they are relatively inexpensive.

Call the shop and talk to DAN or JM and they will steer you in the right direction.

if you are near Chambersburg PA defintely drop in, it is probably my favoriteplace in the world.

if you get a filter pipe like a dr gabow i recommend the first thing you do is unscrew it and toss the filter. i found mine smoked alot better after i did that.

I dump the filters from any pipe that has them. I don't smoke wet, so they are just useless as far as I am concerned.

When I first started, no. Then as I got comfortable and stopped paying as much attention, my form deteriorated, and started smoking way to hot. Lately, I am trying to be very careful and conscious, and much better about not smoking hot. But stilll need to ensure it becomes good habit.

One other tip when starting out: Believe it or not, the wetter your tobacco, the more it will "bite". The steam in the smoke from excessive moisture carries way more heat with it than the smoke itself and will burn your mouth a little.

Very, very correct. Take any tobacco you plan on smoking, and let it sit out at least a half hour before you smoke so it can dry some.
