Ever try carving your own pipe?

You've seen them? Big chunks of briarwood with a mouth piece and a bowl hole. I walked into a tobacco shop to pick up a carton of smokes for a co-worker in another state who pays a ridiculous amount for their cigarettes and I saw it. Asked all these questions about it but the cashier just shrugged. Looked it up and giggled.

I was thinking about just picking one up and start carving! See what I can come up with.

I just carved some holes in an apple, put pipe tobacco in it, and smoked

Actually I've thought of getting one of those kits and just smoking it as is. Not sure how it would work uncarved but it would look really odd/kinky.

I made a "pipe" out of two two-liter bottles and some plumbing supply lines once. Called it The Challenger. I also made a gravity "pipe" in a sink once and named it Ursulla. Oh, those were the days. Never carved one out of wood though.

I've done several from plateau briar blocks. Primarily I used a dremel and then hand sanded down and polished. Very good results on some. However, also had the experience of discovering the drilled hole!
If you try it and use a dremel or other electric sander be sure to get a face mask to protect you from the dust.

Does anyone still carve meerschaum pipes? Or was that just a 70's thing?

Check out Pimo Pipe Craft online. You can get the pe-drilled blocks, tools, stems, etc. They also have a book called "Pimo's Guide to Pipe Carving At Home" that has been the standard since 1972 and started the career of many renowned pipe carvers.

No but I have seen stoners make a pipe by crushing an empty soda can in the middle and then poking some holes on top.

Bringing this thread back to life, lol. I'm carving a briar pipe with my son now. He carved a cool little nose warming poker for me last year, it smokes great and is a good looker too. He was 15 when he did this, and I was amazed that he actually pulled it off. He only used a wood file and sandpaper...he gave it to me for my birthday. I'll have to dig up some pics and show it off.
