Finally got me a Pax Ploom - revelation!

Just took delivery of a Pax Ploom here in the UK ... availability here has been poor but the number of UK eBayers importing them have become more and more and the prices have finally become a bit sensible.

What makes Pax Ploom so unique is that it takes proper smoking tobacco and vapes it ... designed for pipe tobacco - but I would imagine it's also popular for other "herbal" blends

Take aside it's sleek looks (it's bigger than it looks in the pictures! but still pocket sized) - it's impressive battery life and charger that looks as if it was designed by Apple ... the thing actually works - that's the point!

I loaded the bottom oven with some Solani Virginia Flake with Perique - it takes a very small amount of tobacco - about half a roll-up's worth - clicked the mouthpiece in to the on position and waited the 2-3 minutes until it heated up and the light was blue. Then I inhaled the mouthpiece and was completely thrown by the warm thick smoke-like substance that came out of it! It gave about 4-5 minutes of regular smoking type behaviour before the vapour started to become thinner and then disappeared altogether. I then emptied the oven - and the tobacco that comes out is truly not burnt at all ... merely toasted a little.

The taste is the main thing - the tobacco isn't being burned at all so all the flavours are those of the natural tobacco in it's delicious, fragrant, raw state - rather than the usual acrid and life-threatening smoke that I gave up over 5 years ago. It's also not the synthetic world of e-liquid flavours with ridiculous names that are 95% propylene glycol and 5% medical nicotine and flavourings (not that I really have much experience of this side of things). This is a whole new world of the taste of unburnt tobacco vapour and it's as wide and varied as the number of diverse pipe blends that are out there. It's very exciting! And I can also use my home-grown stuff in there too!

It delivers on the nicotine - at about the levels I think cigarettes used to do it for me - but it was so long ago it's hard to remember!

All in all - I think I'm really chuffed with this buy - really happy!

What in your opinion are the health implications of this?

Frankly - I have no idea!

I would imagine I'd have to google for that - but I've just been trying it out and having fun at the moment.

My hunch is that it's better than smoking ... probably a little more risky than snus and hopefully no more damaging than e-cigs - it's definitely only a vapour formed by making the tobacco give out all it's moisture and essential oils without combustion - but what's in that vapour, I'm afraid I don't know

Sounds good. Checked it out on ebay and it's pricey.

I agree it is expensive! But it's come down for UK buyers recently from £250 (wtf! It's only US$250 in America)

Anyway - it was my birthday present to myself ... and although I don't see myself using it a whole lot in regular rotation - it's a very good way to enjoy pipe tobaccos which I have to say I prefer in their raw state just smelling them to burning them anyway.

I predict my bandmates will be seeing the up side of being able to vape other things in the bus while we're on tour in November though. Might have to get myself a grinder!

That sounds awesome! I remember hearing about this a long time ago. Is it still butane powered?

Not butane this one, no - it's electric with a Li-ion battery and even comes with a charging dock that looks like something for a computer accessory!

we just picked this up for distribution, and I love the product. I would disagree that it's "safer" than cigs...because you're combusting "tobacco" and inhaling it. That's just my opinion though....

You're not combusting it Rick. There's a very real difference between the chemical reaction that happens when something actually burns to ash (oxidation) and when it's heated so that it released its unaltered volatile substances.

While I'll admit I have no idea how harmful it is for you to use the pax ... It certainly isn't the same as smoking! The internet seems inconclusive on the subject.

Well, based on this thread, i picked up some American Spirit Organic Tobacco yesterday, to try at home with my Arizer Solo vape (on heat setting 2). I also picked up a non organic cheap pack of KITE menthol tobacco, since i was a menthol smoker. I have not had a cig since March 2nd.

Tried the organic tobacco, and wow, threw me for a loop. Gave me a buzz instantly. Only problem was, the hits were so strong even with the smallest of pulls, I never got to the point where there was visible vapor, which was not a big deal for me, because the thing I got out of it most, was the throat hit. Wow I miss that. i thought WTA E-juice delivered. I was wrong. The throat hit from vaping the tobacco is the closest thing to an actual cig. So I enjoyed that. And the other thing was, for the rest of the night, I had no desire to vape tobacco again. I was completely content going back to snus. So I will use vaping tobacco for those times where a craving kind of overrides the snus satisfaction, knowing that I can just vape a small bowl of it, and be content for the rest of the day, or week, or whatever.

The menthol cheapy stuff was crap and I will not be vaping it again. I would like to try pipe tobacco, because some of the smells are fantastic, I just wonder about all of the extra stuff in pipe tobaco, and wonder if there is any harm in vaping it. But I guess, like cigs, it must be healthier than smoking it I guess.

It's a whole different world isn't it BadAxe?

I wish there was some kind of credible study out there to read rather than a load of people just giving their opinion on various forums ... but I haven't found the net very useful in enlightening me as to which chemicals are released at different temperatures when vaping tobacco directly. I'd have expected something given that the Pax Ploom has been out there more than a year - and it's advertised as only being for using with tobacco (although I'm sure they're not stupid as to what it actually probably gets used for the majority of the times )
