I'm still on the Ettan/Grovsnus//Skruf marry-go-round but I'm not a happy camper. It just doesn't compete with the gul/gellivare of the past. At this point I have little hope of anything good happening in the snus world for grown ups. It's either candy or massive amounts of nicotine. Even the few grown up flavored snus I liked are gone with the demise of Coffee Supreme and Brandy Alexander.

What's next on the agenda. Perhaps strawberry banana milk shake extra stark.......

I don't get it when Jako's ice fruit and melon is on the market but gul los is not. I'm trying to grasp the significants of that and it's not a pretty picture.

Instead though, they believed in the product and the tradition. Got some great creative advertising and long term business plan. And now they're one of the biggest players in the market ... And we still get to taste great Irish stout - win-win I'd say.

It's just a thought about what could be in the snus world if Gotlandssnus believed in the spiel they gave us when Jakobssons first came out - i.e. the belief in the traditional values of mr. Jakobsson and the old local variety of Swedish grown tobacco. Instead we have got this and I am very disappointed.
Very true, and well said gents. I hope that Gotland and any other manufacturer thinking about taking their roots out of their line will read this topic and reconsider. It's sad when a truly great product loses to cheap tastes, simply because there's more money there.

It was Rick, it was sublime.

At least Doris & Roger kept making quality stuff until the bitter end. And they still sell the kits with the flavourings for Gellivare and Landstroms ... Just not internationally :-(

However, I don't fault Gotlandssnus for making business decisions that help keep their bottom line nice and trim. We have to remember that they aren't the behemoth Swedish Match and can't carry brands that aren't making money. Face it guys, lossnus use is declining, no matter how much I love it and no matter how much you love it...less people are using los.
Maybe we should start using the term "lost" instead of lös on these boards then.

It's funny to me, because I promise that I tried this snus on multiple occassions and it just didn't "speak" to me, lol. Now you guys have me wanting to try it again. Oh well ;-)

What made it good was it was just tobacco without a bunch of bullshit. Big brands are a little too smoothed over. It's liked blended scotch, where the goal is sameness and consistency. There's nothing inherently wrong with that, but a lot of the character gets lost in the process. I'm sure it was closer to historic Ettan than Ettan is. Ettan has had too much "smoothing" over the years.

I also believe that quality is compromised with some of the flavored stuff. The flavorings allow you to use cheap tobacco because they mask the taste. Gotlands yellow los was sublime and you could definitely taste the quality of it. To me it was earth, grass and very natural. Nothing like it exists anymore. Candy flavored smokeless is a dime a dozen and can be bought at 7-11 right now. Products like Gotlands yellow and Gellivare just cant be duplicated.

At least there's still Pioneer, though I get nervous every time Northerner is sold out (like now).

Seems reasonable that once a lös-only manufacturer invests in portioning equipment, the margins on tobacco-per-can for lös would be about half that of portions, and the investors would complain that now lös is dragging down profits/growth.

                    Amirite?

The Gringo snus rocks pretty hard too. 50g can, too.

I saw that. The extra salty description appeals to me but on Northerner it also describes Gringo as flowery. The last flower snus I had was Gustavos which was ok but not great.

Another issue - we can't get it here. Thanks for telling us about a potentially great snus we can't even order Chad. May all tobacco shops in Arkansas be filled with General Wintergreen.

I didn't get floral. I reviewed it a while back:
                                http://chadizzy1.blogspot.com/2011/1...-december.html

                                From that review:
"Gringo Snus is very moist and very soft - very comfortable in the lip. The texture reminds me a lot of Oden's Extreme Los. Gringo Snus tastes great. It's a very rich and earthy tobacco flavor that's a little smokey and has a nice salt balance to it. Though I don't get the floral notes, I do get a nice rich flavor that matures into a spicy tobacco taste the longer you have it. Not spicy in the Extreme/pepper sense, but in a well flavored, and full bodied tobacco."
