My mind was made up long ago Tim, the snus ban just added to the fire! lol I am voting OUT.

But remember that the EU ban stems from British concerns over the opening of a Skoal Bandits factory in Scotland! It was us wot made them do it. That being said - if we were to leave the EU then any new UK regulatory laws would have to be drafted from scratch.

The current thinking here is that harm reduction is a good thing and the RCP have given their support to snus etc, the science speaks for itself and the skoal bandits thing was a long time ago, things have changed a lot since then with the research and content of oral tobacco. I can't see dip etc being sold again but snus, there is a legitimate scientific reason.

That's great - if by RCP you mean the Royal College of Physicians then they're a level-headed bunch of evidence based scientific minds. If, on the other hand, you mean the Rubbish Conservative Party ... I wouldn't be so sure.

Every single one of our weak-minded, vote-addicted, one-minute-attention-span career politicians would go against good reliable scientific evidence if they thought they'd lose some votes because a few people think "it's gross". None of them have any depth or integrity to them - they just want to be in power for it's own sake.

          Cheers

Yeah and when they pushed that ban here in the UK it failed to go through from lack of medical evidence. it was when it we joined the EU Brussells enforced it.

That sounds about right, but if we did leave the EU, they might ship Swedish Match to the UK as we'd be out of the EU. But, i still think the ban on sales within the UK would stay, because big tobacco/pharma companies want people hooked on fags, NRT, and sell the NHS expensive drugs for smoking related diseases. Big tobacco/pharma don't care about harm reduction products and will do everything in their power to stop products that affects profits.

Yes the Royal College, they are very pro harm reduction as they have brains that realise NRT is crap and that people still want to use tobacco and you can't just get people to stop smoking over night.

If they can still ship it here and include SM then I can accept that, however the government do accept the RCP's views and hold them in high regard, so if we did leave there is hop eyet we can walk down to the supermarket and pick up a can of snus with the shopping.

Everybody I talk to wants out of the EU. There was an article in The Times newspaper today that confirmed this view.
You know, if snus was still banned I'd find it easier to take on the chin if it was banned by my own government than faceless totalitarian idiots in the EU. At least there's more chance of our government listening to the RCP than the EU will.

The UK introduced the ban first, actually. It then contaminated the rest of the EU.

I thought that was the case too Jean. But I haven't seen any evidence either way on the history of it.

The huge majority of people you talk to from all economic classes and geographic locations will want out, but when it goes up for referendum, the votes will say the reverse. Funny how that works...

I hope we get our sovereignty back too. But I hope we can achieve that without embracing very right wing politics and getting to a position where "socialism" (basically ensuring that we look after our fellow man by regulating to stop selfish human instincts) becomes a dirty word!

I can't remember who said it - but one of my favourite quotes ever is "It's not wrong to vote Conservative, it's just very bad manners." Unfortunately there have been many long periods in British history when we've had a significant majority of people with very bad manners!

                                Cheers
