Swedish Match Launches General Snus Campaign

Swedish Match Launches General Snus Campaign
Smokeless promotion targeting key upscale U.S. markets

RICHMOND, Va. -- General Snus, the original Scandinavian snus introduced more than two centuries ago in Sweden, is now commanding a promotional army in the United States. Swedish Match has launched a multi-million-dollar campaign aimed at introducing the refrigerated pouches to upscale audiences in key U.S. markets and at high-end events, including the Sundance Film Festival and New York's Fashion Week.

Sold in chilled pouches that are placed inconspicuously under the user's upper lip, snus is a popular form of smokefree (and spitless) tobacco that is popular among white-collar professionals throughout Scandinavia, where it first originated in the early 19th century. While the category is still in its infancy in the United States, snus has experienced tremendous growth since its first introduction domestically in 2000, the company said.

The new General Snus campaign—with the theme "Satisfaction: the Original Pursuit"—kicked off last month at the Sundance Film Festival where Swedish Match staged a visible presence as the exclusive category sponsor. A similar effort will take place throughout New York's Fashion Week as well as at art shows and festivals in New York, Chicago and other major markets.

"In Scandinavia, snus has traditionally appealed to a higher-end demographic, which is why the focus of our General Snus 'Satisfaction' campaign is focused on reaching adult trendsetters," said Brian Gray, senior brand manager for Swedish Match. We are excited at the prospect of introducing this relatively new snus category to some of the country's more influential tastemakers. We believe that General Snus can command the category."

In addition to its presence at fashionable events, the General Snus campaign will target four major U.S. markets, New York, Chicago, Denver and Dallas, as well as popular ski destinations throughout the Rockies (Vail, Aspen and Breckenridge, Colo., Taos, N.M., Salt Lake City, Utah and Jackson Hole, Wyo.). The emphasis will be on introducing the product to adult consumers, particularly patrons of bars, clubs and other entertainment venues as well as those professionals working in urban office buildings and office parks. The company will distribute as many as 500,000 samples.

The promotional campaign, which will take place throughout the first half of the year, also includes sponsorships of professional skiers and snowboarders as well as a major sweepstakes. More details on both elements of the campaign will be announced later. In addition, the company will undertake an email and social media campaign incorporating Facebook and Twitter in particular.

"General Snus is currently available in about 600 specialty tobacconist stores throughout the country as well as selected retailers," Gray said. "Our goal of this promotional campaign is to double that distribution within the first year, ultimately growing to more than1, 200 outlets. Given the fact that there are an ever-decreasing number of places where tobacco users can light up, we think that General Snus will provide a convenient and enjoyable alternative to smoking."

Swedish Match has a broad assortment of market leading brands in smokefree tobacco, cigars and pipe tobacco, matches and lighters. Some of our well known brands include General, Red Man, Timber Wolf, and Longhorn. Swedish Match U.S. Sales is headquartered in Richmond, Va.

I'm glad to hear that distribution will get doubled this year. Hopefully other General sub-brands will get distributed as well (Ekstra Sterk, Onyx etc..).

Raising its popularity will only be a bad thing. I do not think snus will take off in America, and it will only make it more visible to the anti-tobacconists.

Also this article reeks of elitism, and if this the approach taken it will not appeal to many outside of the Apple/Starbucks/Hipster crowd.

Lastly, of the 600 stores that sell General, the three around me that are listed as selling it on Generals website have never heard of it.

What truly sucks is that for a very long time, only people in metropolitan areas will benefit from this push. With PACT now passed, people that live in more rural areas like I do will be screwed, and stuck with Camel Crap, Marlboro Crap, or we'll be stuck spending the gas money to drive long distances to procure our $10 a can Swedish snus. The closest place I can get real Swedish snus is 3 hours away in San Jose,Ca, or 3 hours away the other direction in Sacramento, CA.

              I think I'm fu*ked..........

Just order it like you have been.

Where this plan ****s up is that in metropolitan areas are liberal, and anti-tobacco. Putting this on the anti-tobacco crowds radar will only ensure future legislation over it.

I guess SM is getting a little greedy, risking their hand being bitten for some gold.

Hmm...that's not true. At least not for the latter part of the 20th century. Everyone and anyone uses snus over there. Not just the rich folks.

I'm convinced it's all an act and metropolitan liberals are as addicted as the rest of us and that the bans are in place mostly to make up for their lack of will-power.

                          Try this:
                          1. Buy a pack of cigarettes
                          2. Go to San Francisco, maybe down in the financial district
                          3. Light a cigarette
                          4. Be prepared for dozens of complete strangers to approach you and offer to buy cigarettes from you at extremely good prices ($1-$2 per cigarette)- not bums, mostly young professionals, suits, skirts, etc.
                          5. Retire rich

The first time this happened I was like, "Here you can just have one". Then they came back the next day...

So, I started accepting their handfuls of change.

I have converted many existing american smokeless tobacco users (dippers ) to snus. Their biggest complaint is they cant get Snus from the Gas Stations they get their copenhagen and skoal from.

I know Swedish Match have been promoting their snus at a different kind of user such as Wall Street and New Yorkers etc but those redneck dippers like a lot of chaw and dip and many now love Swedish Snus, its a big market for Swedish Match.

Get General in the gas stations as well as in the city gents cigar shops.

I have said it many times, that snus cans need to figure out a way that does not need refrigeration, maybe a foil top under the lid or something, and get them at the gas stations next to the Timberwolf. At least try a few and see how it goes. Really, I think most people get their tobacco at the gas stations and local groceries. Reverving them only at select specialty tobacco/cigar shops will limit their being known about and bought. I only ever visit a tobacco shop when I am specifically looking for something, like Red Man Silver chew, because I had a coupon, and that store did not have Swedish Snus either.
