Start of a Repeal of PACT Act?

    Folks,

The AP finally ran a story today about mailing tobacco to US troops overseas. This is exactly the kind of exposure the PACT act needed. If you read some of the comments posted by people in reaction to the law it looks to me as if the American people think it's BS. In the article, one of the law's backers said that was not the intention of the law and they are looking at changes. I think this will lead to changes or a repeal of the PACT act.

This is good stuff and definitely a step in the right direction. Good job Associated Press!

Here's a link to the story and the readers comments:

Once again, the US government fails to consider the impact of their legislation. Do they really think that doing all this is going to stop kids from smoking? Look at alcohol for example, if you're under 21 you can't buy it, so the incidences of binge drinking have skyrocketed.

The Prevent All Cigarette Trafficking Act of 2009 quietly took effect June 29.
Yes it did, and not by accident. We may see some amendments to certain sections of the act, but I doubt we will ever return to the snus paradise we once basked in.

Yeah, I heard the news story on today's Wall Street Journal podcast and had the same thought that this kind of media exposure will be helpful in getting changes made. It makes people mad when Congress starts screwing our troops. So it's a definite positive to get more attention on PACT. But it also might be easy to amend the law to allow mailings to troops while leaving the rest of it unaffected.

That's what I'm worried about, too. So much for living in a free country, eh?

What's interesting about this is that people are saying "New law" in a lot of the articles, and apparently NOBODY but us and the Senecas knew about PACT. I think that was the governments plan. Sneak it in quietly.

I don't have a passport, so I'm out of luck.

Exactly! But now that our troops are being directly affected, maybe someone will pay attention to this loss of the freedoms they are dying for every day! Keeping fingers crossed! I still have hope, because even though this country isn't perfect by any means, sometimes the politicians listen to us because we have the right to vote.

                            A THOUGHT:

Sneak out of the country illegally.

                            Sneak back in illegally.

That's actually a pretty good idea. Have to be careful sneaking into Mexico though, they have some very strict illegal immigration laws.
