It seems he was near the edge of the cliff and, without thinking, leaned
over to get a better look. The Segway, controlled through body movement,
took its cue from that forward movement and catapulted him over the edge.
Unfortunately, he probably got several views he wasn't expecting; we can
only hope he got to enjoy a few of them before landing ungraciously.
