I am weeping. The most absurd thing is that our government (whether led by the Dems or the Repubs) works hard to foster and promote the export of our jobs and industries.

That's because both parties are totally beholden to corporate interests. We live in a corporate oligarchy masquerading as a democratic republic. There's no better way to enslave someone than to make him believe he's free.
Honestly though I have to say that the republicans have really been pushing hard for taking jobs overseas. I mean I know the dems don't care and are all sluts for their oligarch masters too but as far as actively trying to legislate away our jobs the republicans have really beens tepping it up over the past few months. If they win the house and senate this election I am a bit concerned about what they are going to do in regards to job outsourcing. The dems are going to make it a burden on companies to stay profitable which is bad for business and therefore us, but the republicans are going to make ti easier for business to do good without us. Not really sure which is the lesser of two evils in this situation.
It's all good though because the Obama admin declared mission accomplished and that the recession was over like a month ago. Everything is different now.
I believe that the Chinese are coming. I think that we have a good chance of witnessing it in our lifetime. Hell, we might actually be in the trash compactor as far as the analogy goes.
The fact about the percentage of GDP in consumption was astounding. The balance has been out of whack as far as US output for so long. China isn't the only country but it's a biggie all right. What would happen if we stopped buying Chinese goods? Could we stop buying Chinese goods without the radical lifestyle change causing total anarchy? I think that we should be producing durable goods for other countries or at least have a few cash cows, but perhaps if we have lost the will to manufacture we can export a service.
Interesting: as far as visitations to the US, the Japan and PRC are the highest increased countries of origin for both business and leisure travel
It's going to be a long painful road to recovery here in the US. We don't have the benefit of low energy prices to drive our economy any longer. Past recessions have seen a drop in oil prices. This time around Asia is industrializing and taking up any spare oil capacity. Labor and energy costs is what drives manufacturing and the USA is at a disadvantage on both.
OK I just got back from WalMart and was absolutely amazed that I could get a pair of jeans for $12.00, a sleeping bag for $10.00 and a pair of hiking boots for $20.00. After reading that article, those items don't look so cheap anymore.
Since this country(USA) exports all it's jobs, and imports all it's goods, it's going down, quick. Soon North Korea will have a more successful economy than the US.
