Having a backup server for your data doesn't do any good when your dns is taken. It would be like if the government seized the google's domain name, www.google.com, and had it point to somewhere else. Even if Google had a million servers in every country of the world, it wouldn't do the average internet user any good when they type in http://www.google.com, because no matter where they were in the world, they would NOT be going to the actual site.

And it's for reasons like this that I can't support any political agenda that deals with giving corporations more power. When you give corporations more power, they do shit like this. This is partially the government's fault for cooperating with the RIAA, MPAA, and similar groups for the various entertainment industries, but it's mostly the fault of the companies that are giving politicians the money to sway their votes and ignore the will of the people. Whether we have a dumbocrat or a republishit (or "tea party" that has already been compromised by the republishits) in office, they both listen to money and corporations before they listen to their people.

If you used a DNS server not based in the US, you'd still get google.com, or you could bypass it all together, and just type in the ip address http://173.194.33.104/ but that's less user friendly.

or you could setup your own DNS server, but that's a bit overkill for the purpose.

My guess would be, like so many bills before this one, the senators had no clue what they were voting on and never actually read the bill. They were probably just told if they didn't vote yes, they would be siding with the terrorists and like the blind sheep they are, they simply voted yes.
