    How many of you guys.....

Give a gift card to somebody Just because, Well F uck that. If you are so presumptious to give a card to an establishment based on what you "know" of said person... I call bullshit. Why is it cash is totally exceptable for weddings, graduation, baptisms, and first communions, but not exceptable at b-day parties and chistmas? Why? becaus when you purchase a card that money is in the stores system whether it is redeemed or not. How many of you have found an old GC in your drawer before? I would venture to say quite a few. And even worse, most cards have an expiration date or at least maintenance fees. Don't be fooled by the propaganda that a GC shows more thought than cash. It doesn't and most times doesn't give the same rturn of cash http://www.reuters.com/article/idUSN1246347820071113 Food for thought I hope........

I actually agree with you 100% My instinct has always been, "Why give something they don't want when you can give cash and they can use it how they want?" but am always told, "Oh you can't give cash! That's very inconsiderate, it shows you don't care enough to think about what the person would like". My attitude is it shows how considerate I am by knowing they would rather get their own gift.

But GCs are a complete scam and no one should buy them.

I too have never understood the concept of a gift card being better than cash. I don't care what people think. I give a gift, or cash. In a card with the cash, I may make mention of something I know the person is saving for, but I will NEVER buy a gift card.

On a side note, the state of IL passed a law a few years back that does not allow fees or expiration on the cards. If more states started doing it, the companies would loose all the hype and profit from them.

A gift card says "I can't be arsed to come up with an appropriate gift". The one exception to that is kid's birthday parties. Kid's seem to like them. I guess it's because they work like a credit card, and it's a more "adult" way to shop. Besides, I never know what to get for my daughter to give, so that works out pretty well.

                gift cards are great.

as long as they come from a titty bar.
Grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to hide the bodies of the people I killed because they were annoying......

I've been wrong lots of times.  Lots of times I've thought I was wrong only to find out that I was right in the beginning.

Gift cards are better than cash for drug addicts... That is, if you would rather not buy drugs for an addict. But yeah most people don't redeem them and the stores make a killing from selling what very well may turn out to be nothing at all for $50. My brother is rumored to have a drawer full... I will find them and use them.

I don't mind them. If I got cash, I would spend it on day to day stuff instead of buying myself a gift. My mom gives me a Land's end gift card every year, and that's the only time I buy clothes for myself.

I'd rather have a gift card to Amazon than some piece of junk I'll never use.

Yeah, if I ever DO get a gift card for someone I always make it for a place like Amazon that someone will actually use.

I have never given a gift card and have gotten only one that i remember. Usually if im going to give a cash gift i stuff it in a card. Every time the recipient opens the card and they see that green fall out i notice the slight smile and i don't think most even read the card unless it has some kind of eye catcher LOL. I think these days cash is a very acceptable gift

Guess I am in the minority. I love getting gift cards. Since I know I won't get cash as a gift, I would much rather get a gift card than a gift is someone doesn't know if I would like something. Then I either can get exactly what I want, or save it for when I need something from that store, and it costs me less with the use of the GC.

While you guys may look deep into what it means about the gift giver, I am thankful they didn't try to pick something out for me that I would hate. Yea, me likes gift cards.

You guys can send all your GC's to me. I wouldn't want you guys feeling all offended and grumpy on holidays because of all the GC's you got piled up. Just PM me for my address and I will take them all off your hands.

I buy shoes for my wife, but when it comes to any other apparel for her, she gets a Gift Card. And she LOVES that I didn't try to pick her out something. Now she gets to shop and choose. Yep, gift cards are nice.

I don't like giving them out, but I'll take a Gamestop card in a second!

I will take a gc over a poorly chosen gift, don't get me wrong. My point was I'm not giving them anymore, I'll just give cash. I'm not buying into this over hyped idealology that they are somehow different than cash. I think they are a scam with their maintenance fees and expiration dates and how so many of them go unused........
