So many people who have lost family members would be sad to hear that the predator is going to live a nice life just so the lab coats can study him. He will never pay for his actions, never get what he deserves. You are bringing general justice (medical research on crazies that can be used to the benefit of society), but taking the personal justice away from the family who now must live with the fact that their children's murderer is snuggly behind bars being studied and living his life as though he deserved one.

Option 2 this person is imprisoned forever, no hope of parole, and studied, and the research from studying the person potentially stops 10 future killers, before they kill. Let us just imagine that situation. What would you choose, the satisfaction of seeing that person die, or the satisfaction that you potentially prevent 10 people down the road from sharing your misery and horror at a situation like this?

If we accepted all of the outcomes you describe as absolutes, then yes I would much rather prefer they be studied if it would surely help 10 (or even 1) people. I believe in the greater good most of the time, and I think that would be the best outcome.
But devilock, that's not what happens. These people just sit in jail living their life with all of the other criminals. They are allowed to breath, to enjoy the sunlight, to think about their actions, to find redemption in god, get exercise, enjoy a good meal etc. They can read books! I don't believe they deserve that. If they were strapped to table having someone disect their brains while they are awake, than perhaps then I would approve.
I believe everyone is a human being, and even bad people are human beings too. I have hung with mostly criminals and bad people thruought my life, and while I generally detest criminals, I realize that many if not most of them are actually good people who found themselves in a bad situation. Most of the criminals I know are that way because of poverty or because of a messed up family life, lack of money, lack of direction etc. I believe these people have good hearts and deserve a second chance, a chance to do their time and then the ability to make a personal life decision as to what they are going to do with themselves once they get out of jail. But murderers and people who are just generally dangerous to humans in general (child molesters, rapists etc), I think they deserve the worst kind of fate, and I will accept nothing less.

The prisons(and streets) are loaded with insane people, many of them dangerous. "They" are not going to "study" them. That's you fantasy. To have all these people "studied" would require enormous cost. If they are killers and rapists(real rapists, and not a 18 yr old guy having consentual sex with his 16 yr old girlfriend), these people need to be killed. Now if "they" rounded up all the nuts off the streets and wanted to "study" them, that's another topic. But again, who pays for it? It's just more effecient to be rid of them. We have a failed nation(in the US) as it is, with little hope for it's sane lawfull cisitzens, these people should be the priority, not the dangerous criminals and crazies.
